1 Introduction
This document describes the AMR MM speech for TrFO in a 2G/3G system feature and its
main benefits and impacts in the WCDMA RAN.

This feature introduces support for the 3GPP recommended Adaptive Multi Rate (AMR)
audio codec Set 1 for speech calls between UTRAN and GERAN. It
provides Transcoder Free Operation (TrFO) compatible connections with more efficient
bandwidth use in core network and with optimal voice quality for calls. AMR Set 1, with
codec rates 12.2, 7.4, 5.9 and 4.75 kbps, can then be used as an alternative to AMR Set
14, with codec rates 12.2, 7.95, 5.9 and 4.75 kbps, for AMR Narrow Band (NB) Multi
Mode (MM) multi-rate speech connections.

AMR Set 1 is supported for all speech AMR-NB Multi-mode multi-rate Radio Access
Bearer (RAB) combinations as well as all speech AMR-NB Multi-mode low-
rate RAB combinations.

1.1 Basic Characteristics

This section describes the basic characteristics of the feature.

Feature FAJ 121 1659, AMR MM speech for TrFO in a 2G/3G system
identity:

Release: Introduced in W13.1

Dependencies

This feature requires the following RAN features to be active:

 Conversational RAB for AMR Speech, FAJ 121 146

This feature affects the following RAN features:

 AMR Multi Mode Low Rate, FAJ 121 1381

1.2 Benefits
This section describes the benefits of this feature.

AMR Set 1 is the recommended codec set for Tandem Free Operation (TFO)
and TrFO harmonization between GSM and UMTS networks. This codec set is mandatory
for AMR MM when AoIP, the A-interface based on IP for GERAN, is introduced.

This feature therefore enables TrFO communication in a combined 2G/3G system

where AMR MM is used in both 2G and 3G. The TrFO provides improved speech quality,
improved bandwidth use in the core network, and also improved codec use. TrFO is also
a prerequisite for deploying AMRwideband. For VoIP and LTE AMR, Set 1 is mandatory.

This feature also introduces additional and improved basic observability for AMR speech
in terms of General Performance Event Handling (GPEH) events.

1.3 Additional Information

More information about this feature and related topics can be found in the following
documentation:

 3GPP TS 25.415, UTRAN Iu Interface User Plane Protocols

2 Feature Operational Description
This section describes the AMR MM speech for TrFO in a 2G/3G system feature in more
detail, including network configuration requirements.

2.1 Network Requirements

The following must be fulfilled at feature activation:

 Conversational RAB for AMR Speech (FAJ 121 146) feature must be installed
and activated.

3 Parameters
This section describes parameters introduced by the AMR MM speech for TrFO in a 2G/3G
system feature and parameters affected by activating the feature.

3.1 Introduced Parameters

Table 1 describes the parameters introduced by the feature.

Table 1 Introduced Parameters

Parameter Description
RncFeature::AmrNbMultiModeSet1 Specifies if the AMR MM speech for TrFO in a 2G/3G system feature
is ACTIVATED or DEACTIVATED.

3.2 Affected Parameters

Table 2 describes the parameters affected by the feature.

Table 2 Affected Parameters

Parameter Description
UtranCell::pwrLoadThresholdDlSpeech.amr7950 Threshold to be used in the initial AMR rate selection
algorithm for selecting AMR7.95 (or AMR7.4 in case
of AMR Set 1) speech codec in setup of speech requests.
Expressed relative to the total downlink power load. Only
applicable when establishing an AMR-NB Multi-mode
(single- or multi-rate) RAB.
UtranCell::aseLoadThresholdUlSpeech.amr7950 Threshold to be used in the initial AMR rate selection
algorithm for selecting AMR7.95 (or AMR7.4 in case
of AMR Set 1) speech codec in setup of speech requests.
Expressed relative to the total uplink ASE load. Only
applicable when establishing an AMR-NB Multi-mode
(single- or multi-rate) RAB.
UtranCell::amrNbSelector This parameter is not applicable for AMR Set 1. It defines
whether AMR-NB single-rate or AMR-NB multi-rate should
be supported in this cell. When AMR Set 1 is supplied,
multi-rate is always attempted
RabHandling::amrNbMmUeRelease This parameter is not applicable for AMR MM Set 1. It
defines the earliest 3GPP release of a UE for which AMR-
NB Multi-mode is allowed. When AMR Set 1 is supplied,
multi-rate is always attempted
4 Network Impact
This section describes how the AMR MM speech for TrFO in a 2G/3G system feature
impacts the network functions and capabilities.

4.1 Subscriber Capacity

No feature specific information is identified.

4.2 Network Performance

Using AMR-NB Multi-mode Set 1, this feature enables establishment of TrFO compatible
connections with more efficient bandwidth use in core network and with optimal voice
quality for calls between UTRAN and GERAN.

4.3 Hardware
No feature specific information is identified.

4.4 Inter-Node Interface

No feature specific information is identified.

4.5 Other Network Elements

For the feature to work, the following conditions need to be fulfilled:

 The OSS-RC is able to support AMR Set 1 in existing counters, and it

supports the required new GPEH events.
 To use the improved speech quality for the MM multi-rate based on AMR Set
1, TFO/TrFO and AMR MM Set 1 selection functionality must be supported in
the CS CN (MSC). This is supported in Ericsson CN from MSS 4.1 (MSC-S R12
+ M-MGw R5.1.10.1).
 The UE must support the AMR-NB Multi-mode multi-rate based on AMR Set
1. This has been mandatory since R.99.
