Satellite Image Briefings

Compliments of Starpath School of Navigation

This file is intended to explain the various satellite cloud image files available from the NWS and how to
access them underway by HF radiofax and email request, or when on land using an internet connection. See
Satellite Cloud Images for notes on the these files, in which we discuss why we have assigned our own image
IDs for easier cross reference. These IDs are indicated in the sample images below that list the file names to be
used for direct request. File dimensions and typical sizes are included.
To request the files from the NWS, send an email to NWS.FTPMail.OPS@noaa.gov with the following re-
quest. This request asks for the 18z satellite image and the 18z surface analysis (all case sensitive).

get PYAA08.TIF
quit
To get the same files from saildocs, send email to query@saildocs.com with the following text in the body:
send https://tgftp.nws.noaa.gov/fax/evnt18.jpg
send https://tgftp.nws.noaa.gov/fax/PYAA08.TIF

To get the files from the internet, go to https://tgftp.nws.noaa.gov/fax and then select the file of interest. The
file names are in the sample images below. The blue link in each sample is active to the most current image.
