 thickness, t, ± 0,1 mm, where t constant for a given test device within 10 mm and 15 mm.

The number of sliding plates, n, shall be such as, n × t is slightly smaller than L, so that they can move freely
in the vertical direction during compaction, without allowing bituminous mortar to enter between the plates.

Plates are tightly packed and yet allowing free vertical movement.

5.3.2.4 A steel roller with a diameter that is large enough, so that it can run on the sliding plates, placed
vertically in the mould on top of the bituminous mixture; a segmented roller of appropriate diameter and angle
may also be used. The width b of the roller shall be larger than l or alternatively, the vertical displacement of
the roller relative to the table shall be limited to a maximum value by an equivalent method,

During compaction, the table or the roller shall move back and forth horizontally, so that the velocity, Vt of their
relative displacement is (250 ± 100) mm/s.

6 Preparation

6.1 Mass of bituminous mixture

The mass, M, of the bituminous mixture to be introduced in the mould is a function of the maximum density, ρm,
of the bituminous mixture, of the interior dimensions of the mould, L, and, l, of the thickness of the specimen, e,
and of the voids content, ν, either prescribed, or anticipated (compaction under controlled energy):

 100 − ν 
M = 10 −6 × L × l × e × ρ m ×   (2)
 100 

where

M is the mass of slab, in kilograms (kg);

L is the interior length of mould, in millimetres (mm);

l is the interior width of mould, in millimetres (mm);

e is the final thickness of slab, in millimetres (mm);

ρm is the maximum density of a bituminous mixture, in kilograms per cubicmetre (kg/m³);

11
EN 12697-33:2003+A1:2007 (E)
Committee member copy: Do not reproduce

ν is the voids content in slab, in percent (%).

6.2 Filling the mould

Prepare the bituminous mixture according to !EN 12697-35:2004+A1", or take samples from the
production of the plant according to EN 12697-27.

When the method with a roller running on vertical sliding plates or the method using a wheel fitted with a
pneumatic tyre is used, preheat the mould to the specified compaction temperature for more than 2 h.

Lightly spray the mould and base plate with a non adhesive product, non miscible with bituminous binder.

Fill the mould with the mass, (M ± 0,1 %) of the bituminous mixture reduced as described in 6.1 if applicable,
taking care to spread the mixture evenly in the mould with a shovel and avoiding any segregation; tamp the
mixture including the corners to achieve an even as possible surface before compaction commences.

!The compaction temperatures shall be as defined in EN 12697-35:2004+A1."

7 Compaction procedure

7.1 Method using wheels fitted with pneumatic tyres

7.1.1 Test conditions

 Light compaction for the sweep plan in !Table 1" (specimen: L = 500 mm, l = 180 mm) and
in !Table 2" (specimen L = 600 mm, l = 400 mm);

 Heavy compaction for the sweep plan in !Table 3" (specimen L = 500 mm, l = 180 mm) and
in !Table 4" (specimen L = 600 mm, l = 400 mm).

For specimens of other dimensions, other sweep plans shall be derived for both levels of compaction energy,
with the same cumulated number of passes per unit area transverse section of the specimen in the freed axis
mode, making sure that the number of passes is evenly distributed along the width of the specimen, with a
symmetrical increase and decrease of number of passes on each axis.

7.1.2.3 Compaction to obtain a specified voids content or compaction degree

The methods defined in 7.1.2.2 are not expected to allow the user to obtain a specified voids content for a
particular specimen.

If specimens with a specific voids content, ν, are required, compaction methods shall be modified.

Choose the method defined in 7.1.2.2 which gives a priority the closest result above the desired voids content,
then increase the number of passes making sure that the sweep plane is even (symmetrical increase and
decrease of number of passes), to avoid uneven compaction and surface deformations.

For this case, describe the procedure used on the test sheet and test reports.

7.1.2.4 Smooth cylinder for final compaction

The passes in blocked axis mode at the end of the procedure defined in 7.1.2.2 shall be replaced with
4 passes to 6 passes in blocked axis mode using a smooth steel roller with no transverse displacement.

7.2 Methods using a smooth steel roller

7.2.1 General

Spray a mild soapy solution on the roller or place a film between the roller and the slab.

Compaction shall be done in a smooth continuous motion without interruption.

7.2.2 Compaction by a specified energy

A fixed load, F ± 5 % shall be used if F ≥ 2 kN.

Compact until the required number of passes has been achieved.

7.2.3 Compaction with controlled compaction energy

The load shall be applied by a compaction management consisting of displacement – controlled pre-load and
load. The pre-load and the load shall be applied step by step by increasing the load after each roller pass.

7.2.4 Compaction to obtain a specified voids content or compaction degree

7.2.4.1 Compaction by a constant energy

A fixed load, F ± 20 % shall be used.

Compact until the roller bears down on the mould or, if the roller compactor is equipped so that compaction
stops when the desired height of the slab is reached, until the required sample height has been achieved.

7.2.4.2 Compaction with controlled compaction energy

The number of the steps of load increases to achieve the main load shall be varied in such a way that a
prescribed voids content will be achieved or until the desired final height of the slab is reached.

7.3 Method using a roller running on vertical sliding steel plates

This method is used only for the preparation of specimens at a specified density (or voids content).

The sliding plates shall be preheated together with the mould as specified in 6.2.

Place the sliding plates vertical and tightly together in the mould on top of the bituminous mixture. Set the
moving table or the roller into motion.

Push the roller down onto the steel plates and apply the load, F.

Keep the load constant ± 20 % during compaction, until the roller bears down on the mould, or until the
maximum vertical displacement of the roller relative to the table is achieved.

7.4 Removing the mould

When compaction is completed, let the slab cool to room temperature before removing the mould.

8 Test report
The test report shall include the following information:

a) reference to this European Standard;

b) reference and formula of the mixture;

c) type of mixing (laboratory or plant);

d) date of compaction;

e) mass, M, of the specimen;

f) dimensions of the mould and the nominal thickness of the specimen

g) compaction method used (specified volume or specified compaction energy, type of compactor);

h) test conditions and any procedure details not specified in this standard, and any incident which may have
affected the results;

i) reference temperature for mixing;

j) eventually the measurement of density and method of determination.
