K-12 DS – Sarah Buck

I am planning on having a group of students write about their favorite season, I

will take one of each season to be recorded and put into a digital story. Each
child of the group will write, illustrate, and record about their favorite season.
This lesson will take about a week and a half to fully finish.

S – State Standards and Objectives

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.1.1- Write opinion pieces in which they introduce the topic or

name the book they are writing about, state an opinion, supply a reason for the opinion,
and provide some sense of closure.

I can write to express my opinion with supporting reasons and a closing sentence.

ITSE: 1d- Students understand the fundamental concepts of technology operations,

demonstrate the ability to choose, use and troubleshoot current technologies and are
able to transfer their knowledge to explore emerging technologies.
K-12 DS – Sarah Buck

6b- Students create original works or responsibly repurpose or remix digital resources
into new creations.

6c- Students communicate complex ideas clearly and effectively by creating or using a
variety of digital objects such as visualizations, models or simulations.

6d- Students publish or present content that customizes the message and medium for
their intended audiences.

7c- Students contribute constructively to project teams, assuming various roles and
responsibilities to work effectively toward a common goal.

S – Select Strategies, Technology, Media, and Materials

The technology, media, and materials that best support the method of teaching that I
will be using will be an iPad, iPhone, paper, pencils, and computers, Hello Crayon app,
30hands app. I will also have the students use a phone microphone to help them speak
into it to help have better sound quality.

Having the students recording their opinion writing is beneficial to their learning in many
ways. They tend to rush through their work and have a hard time going back to edit their
writing. I emphasized to them that their writing needed to be revised so they can spend
more time recording and illustrating their drawings. They were eager to draw using the
Hello Crayons app, and after a quick walk through of it from me, got started. They
completed their drawings after they had written their opinions. Once all their pictures
were complete, we added them to the 30hands app. After all of our images were in
order we started to record. While the students were recording they realized that some of
their writing needed to be corrected. This was so beneficial not only for me, but for the
students to realize they really do need to revisit their writing. After writing tweaks were
made we recorded again. We practiced reading our opinions before recording. We
practiced when to stop so we could transition to the next picture, as well as working on
our fluency. I focused more on fluency this time since it was our first time recording.
After a few recording takes, the students got the hang of it and recorded their writing.
After several students were finished I compiled four students work (one for each
season) into our digital story. After the final copy was made we shared our opinions with
the class. The class really enjoyed to hear their classmates, and are all eagerly awaiting
to record themselves. I would love to make this a center during reading rotations to see
what the students would come up with.

U – Utilize Technology, Media, and Materials

K-12 DS – Sarah Buck

Preview the Technology, Media, and Materials-- I will show the students how to draw,
edit and record using the iPad as well as ensuring they understand how to use and
navigate the apps (Hello Crayons and 30 hands app). I will also have the students go to
a quiet spot to record their parts. The students will use a retro phone receiver
microphone to help reduce background noise as well as ensuring the students speak
into the receiver. See image 1.

Prepare the Technology, Media, and Materials-- I will bring in my iPad for my students
to use once they can complete their writing of their favorite seasons and have given
three reasons and a closing statement. On the iPad they will create their drawing (Hello
Crayons) of the season they chose as their favorite. After they have drawn their three
reasons they will use the 30hands Starter app to record themselves reading their
opinion piece of their favorite season.

Prepare the Environment-- We will work on this at the back table. The students will have
space and time to work on their writing, pictures, and recordings. I will also try minimize
other students and/or background noises by having the other non-recording students
will be working on chromebooks.

Prepare the Learners-- First, I will clearly inform the students as to what the learning
objectives are. Next, I will show the students the rubric for their opinion writing piece to
ensure they have included all the necessary parts of the writing process. Once their
writing is complete, we will discuss how to use the selected apps to draw and record
their reasons.

Provide the Learning Experience-- Once the students have completed their writing, they
will start to work on their images for their DS. After their images are complete they will
begin to record their writing pieces to go along with their pictures. The students listened
to their recordings to see if they needed to make any changes. After the students we
happy with their recordings we put them together in a slide show.

After the slideshow is complete, they will share with their classmates. I will also send a
copy to the parents to view their students hard work. I am going to see if the school will
share it on their facebook page for other students, and parents to view. I will also try to
get permission to share their work on my Twitter page.

R – Require Learner Participation

The students will learn how to write an opinion piece during the writing block. I will pull
the students into a small group to ensure they understand the writing process as well as
to monitor their writing. They will then be given explicit instruction on how to use the

apps on the iPad that are necessary to perform the task. All members of the group will
be graded on the assignment which should help motivate them.

Retro Receiver
Microphone - Used for
recording students.
This helped the
students speak directly
into it which helped
with recording.

Ipad - Students used

to created their
drawings of their
reasons for their
favorite seasons as
well as recording their
voice over on their
slides.

Hello Crayons App-

This app we used to
draw out their reasons
for their favorite
seasons.

30 Hands App- We
used this app to add
their drawn images into
a slide show and
record their reasoning.

Organizer- We used
these organizer to put
our thoughts about our
favorite reasons.
K-12 DS – Sarah Buck

Writing paper- Once

the students have their
topics on their
organizer they were to
meet with me to check
for corrections. After
they got the all clear,
they were to start on
their draft. Since I was
marking their papers
up for recording we
skipped the final draft
copy.

Editing Checklist- We
use this checklist
before, during, and
after we write our
opinions. When the
students were “done”
writing I had them
double check their
work and fill out their
editing checklist.
K-12 DS – Sarah Buck

Grading Rubric- Rubric

used to grade writing
assignment. We
viewed the rubric
before writing, during
writing, and after
writing to make sure
they knew exactly what
was expected of them
and how they were to
be graded.

E – Evaluate and Revise

DS: https://youtu.be/O78TcZcniPg

I will evaluate the lesson during and after the process. I will ask myself if they met the
lesson objective. I will learn from their questions they have if modification is needed.
The rubric for their writing should also help serve as an evaluation of the lessons taught
about writing an opinion piece. The recording part is very new to them, so there will be
some revision needed during the process.

Revisions:

The revisions I would make would be while working with recordings, I will make
sure the students are pulled out of the room or develop a recording box to help limit
background noises. My volunteer was out the day we started recording, and I had left
my ipad at home the other day she was there. I think having a completely private spot
for them to record would have been a better choice. Since it was their first time
recording I could tell some were nervous.

I added the microphone phone to help with the students recordings. My thought
was that they would need to speak into the receiver end of the phone. I was hoping it
would record them a little louder, but wasn’t what I expected. I would pull them into the
hallway next time to also help eliminate extra background noises. After each student
recorded I had them listen to themselves to make sure they read fluently and didn’t get
hung up on their words. Next time I would also have them write each reason on large
index card instead of them writing on their full sheet paper. Having done that would
have helped eliminated some time re-recording. I had to mark off their papers to remind
them to stop so we could transition to the next slide. I feel like my kids caught on quick
with the recording and they were excited to use the phone to record. I am excited to
share their work with their parents, and their classmates loved hearing and seeing their
work! I think I could teach them to record their own writing and hopefully incorporate it
into a center.
