A Proposed 11KV Distribution Network

1.0)

A proposed 11KV distribution network for areas A and B is shown in Figure 1.1. Each 33KV/11KV
transformer is rated at 30 MVA with a leakage impedance of 12.9% and all the four transformers are
expected to be operated in parallel. Each neutral of the 11KV terminal is earthed through a 6.5 ohm
resistor. The load at each 11KV/0.4KV substation is 2 MVA in area A, 3MVA in area B and no load at
substations A and B. The capacity of each 11KV copper conductor, XLPE insulated cable is 12MVA
with a k constant of 143 and an average length of 2km. The impedance of the 12 MVA cable is (0.08
+ j0.1) ohm per km. SCADA facilities will not be provided. Only one planning criterion is required; i.e.
the supply should be restored within 10 to 15 minutes for a busbar fault at either substation A or B.
The maximun relay plus breaker operating time is limited to 2 seconds.

Figure 1.1:

a) Identify five major weak points in the proposed distribution network.

b) Determine the maximun three-phase fault current in the 11KV network and the minimun
breaker’s breaking capacity for all the 11KV breakers. Determine also the minimun cable size
of all the 11KV cables. Neglect all the cable impedances in your calculations.
c) Determine the three phase fault current and the maximun earth fault current at node 6 if
breakers [4,5], [20,11] and [7,9] are at open position.
