for schools

After some weeks evaluating the main needs of the children in the slums, our colleague Alice
from Spain, started to settle a whole budget proposal called “Plan Marshall 2018” in order to
make a budget who cover the main areas to help and assist that slum children, specially
education, sanitary conditions and basic material as clothes, glasses and shoes in their daily life.
The second point in the plan was about raised some funds and help from NGO Jeevan
Rekha Parishad and promote a crowdfunding in social networks and with relatives and friends,
explaining our plan, in order to get enough money for help the children.

In this case, some people from Spain and also Czech Republic, specially some friends
answered our initiative, sending money which helped to carry out our plan. It started with a
journey where Alice, with the collaboration of other volunteers, bought with the raised money
some materials for schools as folders, pencils and notebooks, with the name of each student in
order to make a stronger belonging feeling with the school and to motivate children to go there.
They received happily all the unexpected material in the Banafulla Slum.

3.4 Last but not least....Farewell of first YOSE volunteers and Next
Projects. Christmas dinner and Long life binds.

After our time teaching at schools and meeting the vast and diversity of Indian culture was
the moment to do our last visits to children in slums and to say goodbye to our friends and
coordinators, or better said, “see you soon” in our farewell. It was a great dinner with our friends,
made also by a French couple which is travelling around Asia, through several countries with a
great gastronomic initiative in order to exchange traditional recipes between countries around
the world. In this case they made for all the European volunteers staff their amazing traditional
crépes which we enjoyed all together. After that, Alice and me, Daniel, we had to say good bye
to all and going to sleep bearing in mind the long journey we have to face the next day. After our
long journey, we spend some days resting and taking into account, for sure, how to continue our
labour in Bhubaneswar with the European volunteers who are still there, with the NGO and for
sure, with the children to continue promoting a better life long conditions for them.
4. LAUNCHING OUR OWN VOLUNTEERING PROJECT: MATERIAL
CROWNFUNDING AND EVALUATION PROGRAM CHILDREN!!

4.1 Monitoring and Evaluation in Slums. Problems.

One of the problems we found in the slum schools were about there were not any written
control or a way to motinorize about which is the level of knowledge of each children,
furthermore than teacher knows about each child. So, in order to have a more accurate
knowledge about the children improvements, we have created a shared online document of
each slum where all volunteers and teachers can write the advances and needings of the
children. It allows the teachers and volunteers to follow a coherent line with every children, and
have a control of teaching in formal and non formal education.

There is a lack of motivation in some children in slums which even includes parents that didn't
have a proper and constant education and that is the reason why sometimes don't see how
education can also helps their children.
So, with this simple document online we can know the features, strong and weak points of each
one with a customize profile which includes photo, name, age, education fields that includes
english, maths and oriya to help them to reach goverrnamental school access and even, how to
motivate them and their vocational skills.

4.2 Method and Needs

About the method is just a first step to look into the pupil needs. In the future will be desirable to
do a more wide document that will be filled from time to time, scheduling a kind of continuos
evaluation where all the children, separated by ages and level, will be followed in their
improvements and needs in order to get a process more similar to formal education and, of
course, for get a control about this dynamic changes that sometimes happens unnoticed even
for teachers who deal with them everyday.

About needs, even when always there are more we can improve, essentially the roots of the
problems are around how we can involve the whole slum community and to raise awareness
about how important is education to change things in the community, specially to find their
vocation and a more adequate to face the problems that, generation by generation, are being
perpetuated by stereotypes and deeply rooted ideas in the society.

So first, be aware of cultural stereotypes, second boost education culture in this communities
and third get more resources to improve the evaluation and teaching system are the main
aspects to overpass for all the community.

4.3 Next Steps and Tools

After see the main problems we have to face all together to improve the educational situation in
this areas, we can point what should be our next steps and possible tools to improve education
system in slums.

First of all, we can learn some important lessons about non formal education, as for example
some success methods like which are applied in Montessori schools.

They put first the creativity of the children and logical reasoning through games instead just
being focused in old methods of formal education that don't works on motivate children of
continue improving.

So, in that way, we can also learn a lot about the widely treatment that European Union has
been given to non formal education in different countries, collecting first the best information
about the most effective games and methods to motivate and teach children without being
limitated just due to formal rules which don't cover all kind of intelligences that actually exists.

4.4 Final Overview

After our amazing and really educational experience, we will strongly advice to continue the
work and efforts to continue supplying resources and motivation to this children, as is being
doing with the support of Jeevan Rekha Parishad and european volunteers. Is this strong
alliance between the know-how of this long-term association work and the several points of view
and the field work of the volunteers that allows, keeping in the time, that the life of at least some
of this children will change drastically, reducing the gap between social classes with low
resources and social classes which has more advantages for several reasons.

It's all of this, which as said, has to be keeping the path to the success for the work of all the
NGO staff and volunteers, and for sure it will continue a lot of years more.
