Popatrao Pawar showed the way to revive rural water resources.

Lack of groundwater and the failure of successive monsoons at Hivre
Bazaar, a village of 1,300 people in Maharashtra's rain-shadow area,
made it impossible to grow anything other than bajra. That was until
Popatrao Pawar became its sarpanch. As agricultural incomes fell,
villagers migrated, unemployment rose, crime became commonplace and
illicit liquor-making flourished. Conditions deteriorated to such a level
that no government official wanted a posting there. When Pawar, a
Mr. Popatrao budding cricketer, was elected as the sarpanch in 1989, his family was
Pawar upset as it wanted him to stay in the city. "But I felt that I needed to make
my village better," he says.

Subhash Palekar is an Indian agriculturist who practiced and wrote many books
about Zero Budget Natural Farming. He was awarded India's fourth highest civilian
award the Padma Shri in 2016. He says ” If we want to restrict the suicides then we
have to give the farmers such technique, in which there will be no need to take debt to
Subhash the farmers. The outcome of the Green Revolution i.e. Chemical farming and now a
Palekar days Organic farming had forced the farmers to purchase everything, destroyed the
natures self reliant, self developing system and finally towards suicide. But, do not
worry. I have come with the way to come out of this suicide maze of Green
Revolution- Zero Budget of Natural Farming.”

Purpose of Selecting Topic: Natural Farming

Zero Budget Natural Farming (ZBNF) or Zero Budget Spiritual Farming (ZNSF) is a holistic method in which
farmers are not allowed to buy market based inputs like chemical fertilizers, chemical pesticides etc. for growing
plants within zero budget and encouraged to grow healthy soil with friendly earthworms and thereby grow healthy
plants. In India whrer farmers are below poverty line, this ZBNF technique can be helpful

How this will be beneficial to students and staff?

Many students and faculty members are associated with farming directly or indirectly.
When they will come to know about this idea of ZBNF then it may impact their revenue generation from
farming. Also, they will create awareness amongst their close by people of their village.
