Summary:

According to the recent study, people who have been exposed

to common upper respiratory viruses, such as the cold or flu, ahead
of symptoms can be identified through blood test by what is called
genomic “signature” found in the blood. Through the examined 60
healthy individuals who were infected with viruses (live cold virus,
respiratory synctial or influenza A virus) changes were observed in
their 30 genes which are the body’s response to infections. And for
the reason of changes in the genes, it is easier to identify whether
the infection is viral or bacterial and can also discover who has viral
infection and who has none. Through the detailed understanding of
the responses using gene expression data, it will reveal what type of
pathogen the person is reacting to as stated by Dr. Aimee Zaas of
Duke University in Durnham, N.C. The study was published in the
issue for the month of August of Cell Host and Microbe emphasizing
that it could lead to changes in the doctor’s way of caring the
people with URI. Dr. Geoffrey Ginsburg added that the blood test’s
result and knowing the pathogen are so important for it affects the
urgency of response and the needed treatment to be intervened.

Reaction or Comment:

After pondering this article, I realized that URI are not easily
known or detected and laboratory exams or procedures are indeed
important to precisely determine what kind of respiratory illness is
occurring or will occur on the patient.
I chose this article because of the patients that I have handled
during the morning shift are rushed into the emergency room due to
pneumonia and other upper respiratory problems.
I am in agreement with the article because we all know how
big influence laboratory influences the way the doctor makes
diagnosis and the nurse making his or her nursing diagnosis. It
supports the data you have gathered to thoroughly make
interventions which are informed and tailored for the patient’s case.

Application:

As a Nursing Student of HTC, I can apply this learning by

understanding patient’s case holistically. I should see to it that all
important data are complete and accurate like in making case
studies. I should also be informed of the purpose of each data.
In a country with top mortality rate caused by respiratory
diseases like pneumonia I should be aware of the important things
about it like symptoms, the precautions and et. al. to ensure quality
patient care.
