Description of Problem Statements

1. Cardboard & Waste Paper Packing Machine
PS#1 Weightage: 80
The majority of industrially used cardboard and waste packing machines are available only at a
high-power consumption, a high price and generally not suitable for the local waste paper
market. In these circumstances a manual machine is used which relies on a worm driven
mechanism to press the waste, which involves lots of drudgery and still requires that the waste
be packed. Can a machine be created that is an appropriate middle ground between the two
types- is more energy/cost efficient (incorporates a renewable energy source), reduces the
drudgery and work process involved and is easy to use?
Cardboard/Waste paper Packing Machine:
Commonly called Baling machine, it is used to pack waste paper and cardboard tightly into
boxes. There are different types of baling machines based on purpose (used to compress
cardboard/paper/plastic film/cotton waste, etc.), capacity, etc. Depending on the type, the cost
also varies from about 1.5 lakh rupees to nearly 8 lakh rupees. Reference [4] lists various such
products currently available in the market.

2. Paper Plate Making Machine
PS#2 Weightage: 80
Micro scale paper plate making is a huge industry and there are various types of paper plate
making machines for a variety of different types plates, and production scales. This could be
ascribed towards the high and differing energy consumption for the differing machines, plate
types and quantities. Can the high pressure and heat technology behind paper plate making
be rethought, so that the energy costs could be brought down and the reliability on mains
electricity increased?
Steps involved in manufacturing paper plates:
In general, the steps involved in making paper plates are as follows.
● The paper sheet is cut into two square pieces of suitable size
● The pieces are cut into circles by a circular blade
● The circles are then heat-pressed with molds/dies to make the plates
Majority of energy/effort is needed for the third step – heat-pressing the paper.

Questions:
Both products (1 and 2) raise the same set of questions:
● How to improve the present high pressure and heat technology to make it more
energy-efficient while also reducing manual labour?
● Can we modify these machines so that at least part of the energy requirement is
satisfied through renewable energy sources like solar energy?

How to make these machines cost-effective?

3. Solar Powered Sugarcane Juicer

PS#3 Weightage: 60
Sugar cane juicers inhabit small portable stalls on wheels and they use
diesel operated crushing machines to extract the juice from the sugar
cane before serving. In the virtue of replacing non-renewable fuel
sources with renewables, can a solar powered sugar cane juicing cart be
created which can out-compete the diesel operated ones in price,
extraction efficiency, energy efficiency and usability?

Current Scenario
Though creating solar panels, its assembly and the sugarcane juicer
related stuff is indeed a challenge. You can get to know each step for
making portable solar panels here.

Copyright © 2018 - 19 Mechanical Engineering Association, IIT Madras

Moreover, there are developed economic and durable solar powered juicers. You can check it
out here.
What can be worked upon?

● The technical aspects of the juicer itself can be worked upon to make it less energy
consuming but still efficient and durable (also the quality of the juice cannot be
compromised).
● Working on efficient methods for storing the energy produced as contingency or making
it a hybrid is also possible.
● Altogether working on the portability and cost on existing products is the challenge here
– both at the solar panel front and the juicer (the machinery) front
● Ease of manufacturing with less environmental impact
● The basic idea is how the team will be able to modify the existing models for solar
powered sugarcane juicers to make it more feasible for the vendor to afford, given his
life scenario.
What about inculcating 3D printing? Any advantages?

4. Garland Making Machine
PS#4 Weightage: 100
Problem Statement
Garland making is a lucrative business but involves a completely manual making process. If the
process could be automated or even semi-automated, then the productivity and therefore
earnings could be increased. However, vendors claim an amount is skill is required when
dealing with delicate flowers. Can a device be created which complements the habits of the
vendor but streamlines/eases the making process and increases productivity?
How does solving this problem help?
Traditionally, garlands are made completely from
scratch by hand, owing to the delicate nature of
the flowers. They can either be knotted into
bunches or can be made into garlands.
If there is an increase in the production of these
valued and intricate garlands, vendors, consisting
mainly of women, will be able to earn more and
improve their standard of living. It is precisely the complexity of making these intricate weaves
that makes the garlands pricier and more importantly, time-consuming.

Existing Solutions:

Copyright © 2018 - 19 Mechanical Engineering Association, IIT Madras

A few projects have already been put forward regarding the automation of the process of
garland making.

One such project:

http://gyti.techpedia.in/project-detail/design-and-development-of-semi-automatic-flower-knot
ting-device/5014
This model would be useful for small-scale production of garlands and according to the model,
would require a slight change in the equipment with a change in the type of flowers being used.
It is possible to make the technology cost efficient, as the budget of most vendors would be
low. It can also be made in a way that it is easy to understand and operate the machinery.
Garlands using bigger flowers are generally made by piercing a needle through them and
stringing them onto a thread, a process which seems to be profitable with automation and a
task easy enough to achieve.
Drawbacks:
● This model might not be useful in making
garlands using variety of flowers and would be
able to handle only small flowers
● Probability of damage to the flowers is
high
● Efficiency of the method is questionable,
since there would be quite a few factors affecting
the quality of the garlands produced
● The process would require constant
human monitoring and intervention.
(Tip: Garlands which use bigger flowers might be easier to make using machines as they tend to
be less prone to damage compared to smaller flowers like jasmine)
There are also existing technologies for making garlands which include tying together bunches
of leaves, twigs, etc.

Desired Features:
● Can handle various types of flowers
● Minimize the use of power
● Should be easy to use
● Minimum chance of damage to flowers
● Complements and speeds up the process of production by a significant amount

Copyright © 2018 - 19 Mechanical Engineering Association, IIT Madras

● Low maintenance costs even though high investment cost (profits in the long run)

Questions:
● Would it be ideal for the process to be completely automated or only semi-automated?
● How would the increased demand for flowers be met as garlands are made at a larger
number and a faster rate? If the demand is not met, would the implementation of such
technology be financially beneficial?

5. Khoa Making Machine
PS#5 Weightage: 60
Objective:
To design a machine that can make stirring operation in the Khoa preparation easy
About:
● Khoa making is a simple process but requires continuous stirring of milk in its
preparation time of 3 – 4 hours in hot conditions
● At most attention needed during the boiling of milk – little carelessness burns the milk
at the bottom of the vessel
Traditional method:
In a big vessel called kadai placed over a chulla (chulla is feed with agricultural residue used for
burning purpose) around 50 lit of milk is poured which produces nearly 20kg khoa by stirring
continuously for 3 hrs.
Drawbacks:
● Limited capacity due to batch operation resulting in non-uniform product quality and
thus not suitable for large volume production
● Inefficient use of energy and low heat transfer of bulky equipment
● Large spillage loses

For detailed understanding, watch this video:

https://drive.google.com/open?id=1Nt7OIcD7o2bKB_rfpExN7w11zS2tB6Hm
Points to consider:
● Cost: there are several machines – highly expensive for small scale producers to afford
● Quantity: as each cycle deals with 60-100 lit equipment must be big enough to fit in
such large volumes
Copyright © 2018 - 19 Mechanical Engineering Association, IIT Madras
● Power supply: consider that most of the villages do not have proper power supply
● Type: less manual work will be appreciated at least in the stirring part
● Time: Instruments consuming less time than manual work will be encouraged

6. Efficient Technologies for Drying Fish
PS#6 Weightage: 70
Context:
This is primarily a coastal activity. The current practice involves drying fish in an outdoor
environment for drying and then indoors for smoking. The second practice is in shacks on
beaches where they lay it on racks on stoves with coal or wood burning which serves two
purposes for smoking and drying it out which makes the fish last for longer. The challenge here
lies that the heat is difficult to generate efficiently using solar or direct conversion of electricity
and this also loses the authentic smoky flavor.
Smoking is a method of preserving fish which combines three effects:
● Preservative value of the smoke: the smoke produced from burning wood contains
many compounds, some of which will kill bacteria, e.g., phenols.
● Drying: the fire which produces the smoke also generates heat and this will dry the fish.
● Cooking: if the fish are smoked at a high temperature, the flesh will be cooked, and this
will destroy the enzymes and kill bacteria.

Normally the term 'drying' implies the removal of water by evaporation. Since water is essential
for the activity of all living organisms its removal will slow down, or stop, microbiological or
autolytic activity and can thus be used as a method of preservation. The words smoking, and
drying are part of the same overall process and are often interchanged.

Some of the issues with drying outside are that temperatures can’t be regulated and can be
unhygienic as well. Also, some fish may become very hard by drying.

Smoking and drying can cause health problems to the people who are doing it as well. So, there
is a need to explore new ways of drying and smoking fish efficiently.
A lot of fish drying, and smoking technologies have been invented to cover the disadvantages
mentioned above. Details of couple of them have been mentioned below;
Smoking Kiln technology for Fish
Processing:
This equipment comprises of four
compartments: a smoking chamber, a
fan for uniform distribution of heat and
smoke, a thermometer for temperature
control, a chimney to remove moisture
as well as damper to filter smoke and
reducing the content of fish carbon
dioxide (CO2). The entire machine is
powered either by solar panel (if the
sun is out) else this can also be done electrically.

7. Efficient Technology Value Additions for Turmeric Processing Chain
PS#7 Weightage: 80
Introduction:
Turmeric is a flowering plant of the ginger family, Zingiberoside, roots of which are used in
cooking. The plant is rhizomatous, herbaceous, and perennial, and is native to the Indian
Subcontinent and Southeast Asia and requires temperatures between 20 and 30 °C (68 and 86
°F) and a considerable amount of annual rainfall to thrive. Plants are gathered each year for
their rhizomes, some for propagation in the following season and some for consumption.
When not used fresh, the rhizomes are boiled in water for about 30–45 minutes and then dried
in hot ovens, after which they are ground into a deep-orange-yellow powder commonly used as
a coloring and flavoring agent in many Asian cuisines, especially for curries, as well as for
dyeing. Turmeric powder has a warm, bitter, black pepper -like flavor and earthy, mustard -like
aroma.
Turmeric Processing:
Currently people travel to large centralized to get their turmeric processed. There are various
machines that are involved at various stages of turmeric processing like grinding and polishing
however these solutions are not very efficient for use at the decentralized level. The flowing
process is the generally followed process across our country.

Boiling Process

Processing of turmeric powder

What can be done to improve the process?
● Turmeric processing consists of many steps, which require large number of equipment.
Can these equipment or processes be modified so that they can be more efficient?
● The workers must be very careful about the time taken in boiling the turmeric in order
to ensure that the color of turmeric does not deteriorate. Can we improve the boiling
process by introducing a more efficient device?
● The rhizomes must be cut before drying them in the usual process, we can use another
device to make the process of slicing easier. Some machines already exist, but the
process can be made better with less consumption of energy and more output of work
● For grinding of turmeric, generally grinding mills are used, where the rhizomes are cut
into small particles, then shifting it through a series of screens of different mesh size, to
get a fine powder. We can design a device, so that they don’t have to reach another
mill, which won’t be much cost productive

8. Efficient Technology Value Additions to Pepper Processing
PS#8 Weightage: 90
Introduction:
White pepper gives modified natural flavor to foodstuff, imparts pungency and matches the
color of the food, particularly suited to go with sauces and soups. It also has many medicinal
benefits for patients suffering from arthritis, joint pains, high blood pressure, improper
cholesterol levels, and even prostate cancer. White pepper processing involves extra work and
has a risk of losing the crop to the birds or to the weather making it more expensive than black
pepper.
White Pepper Processing:
Following are the stages involved in the processing of white pepper.
Threshing:
Fully ripe/overripe berries are selected and threshed. After harvest the pepper berries are
removed from the stems either by hand or by beating with sticks or by using a mechanical
thresher.

Soaking:
They are crushed lightly, filled in muslin bag and are soaked in slowly' flowing water for 7-10
days, which helps in decomposition of berry skin.
Peeling:
The skin is removed by rubbing the berries in sieves. Videos in following links depict peeling
process which is used for coffee beans. Similar process needs to be devised for peeling pepper
berries.
● https://youtu.be/7UdWQY9x2x0 (hand operated pulping machine)
● https://youtu.be/XSXYRYC4gAQ (Pulping machine)
Drying:
After removal of skin, the berries are washed and sun-dried for 4 days to get white pepper. The
use of a solar dryer should improve the quality of the dried peppercorns as it is a cleaner, more
controlled environment. The simplest type of solar dryer is the cabinet dryer which can be
constructed locally from available materials such as bamboo, coir fiber or nylon weave. During
the wet season or at times of high humidity, it is not practical to use a solar dryer or to dry in
the sun. A combination of a solar and electrical dryer should be used in such conditions.
● https://youtu.be/BQDRyLqrmks (Solar food dryer)
● https://youtu.be/SfiDb3i2XCw (Solar food dryer)
Grading:
Recovery of white pepper is about 28% of fresh ripe berries. The dried pepper is graded and
sorted by size and color before packing.
● https://youtu.be/jMlZlcF3vWQ (Grading by size)
● https://youtu.be/yv0X_p3fXaA (Grading by color)

Grinding:
Grinding can be a method of adding value to a product. However, it is usually not advisable to
grind spices as this makes them more vulnerable to spoilage. The flavor and aroma compounds
are not stable and will quickly disappear from ground products. For more info: Click here
Hygiene considerations for white pepper processing:
Persons engaged in threshing, sifting, sun drying, etc. should clean their hands and feet with
soap and water before they begin to work. Baskets and other containers used in processing and
storage should always be kept clean. The premises should be dry, and stores should be clean
and hygienic. Borders of the drying yard should be protected to keep out birds and domestic
animals.

Problem Statement:
As we have seen above, all the pepper processing stages can be handled manually or with the
help of simple machines. However, in view of the laborious process and hygienic issues involved
in the processing of white pepper, can a compact, integrated and cost effective, preferably
solar-powered, processing machine or plant be devised?

9. Efficient Mango Drying Technologies

PS#9 Weightage: 70
Dry mango processing is one of the oldest methods for preserving mango and its products.
Industrial hot air-drying method is now days most effectively used method and resulting in
increasing income of small-scale farmers and processors.
In factories the process includes:
Selection of material:
Choose a mango fruit which are in good condition, nearly ripened.
Washing:
Trimmed mangoes are conveyed to fruit vegetables air bubbles washing machine. The machine
is suitable for soaking, washing, removing dirt or pesticides under multiple functions of blast,
cleaning methods etc.

Peeling and coring: mango should be peeled because it’s skin contains tannin which affects
food product quality. Mango peel and scar would be removed by multifunctional fruit peeling
machine, and machine could be equipped with stoning device to complete fruit peeling, stoning
and separating steps in one machine, highly efficient and automatic. After stoning, mango cores
with remaining pulp can be further crushed by mango juice machine to collect more juice.

Sometimes drying out under Sun is also preferable. It is described in brief as shown below

Cutting:
Drying temperature and other conditions depend upon the thickness. So, the way in which we
are cutting will affect drying time in our process.
Drying:
With help of Hot Air Fruit Drying machine, we can put plates over drying vehicle and set
appropriate temperature. Hot air drying is a major way of processing agricultural and sideline
products. It is low cost, versatile and simple method. For faster process you can flip mango
peels in between and processing time is dependent on moisture content after drying.
Questions:
● Can we can dry an entire mango?
● What will be the structure of entire mango drying process?
● Are there any efficient methods other than mentioned above for drying of mango?
