COURSE SYLLABUS
The mission of the International College of the Cayman Islands (ICCI) is to prepare students for career
placement and enhancement. The ICCI education instills attitudes, behaviors, sensitivities, skills and
knowledge that are essential to life and learning. The ICCI experience advances the potential for
leadership and a commitment to community service. ICCI equips graduates with practical skills of
critical thinking, problem solving and self-directed learning for success in the 21st century job market.

Course Title: Seminar on Cayman Islands


Course Number: SO 230
Course Description: Study of the history, and the social, economic, cultural and political
structure of the Cayman Islands, includes lectures, readings and field
experience.

Participating/Attendance You must attend all field trips, activities, and lectures associated with
this seminar in order to avoid grade deductions for participation. Please
aim to participate by making valuable contributions to discussions
throughout the duration of the seminar. For every “missed” day of
seminar’s field trips, 5 points will be deducted from your total
Reflection Grade. Late submissions and/or late arrivals will attract point
deductions as well.
PRIDE WORKSHOP In teams, you will select one aspect of the Know Your Cayman Islands
Workshop and customize your own PRIDE Workshop to fully train and
engage your participants in that area.

Areas of Interest are:


1. Cayman’s historical sites and monuments and Cayman’s
indigenous flora and fauna
2. Cayman’s cultural food and beverage and Cayman’s
folklore and dance
3. Cayman’s Politics and State of Government and Cayman’s
National Symbols, Flag, Song and Anthem

Full details will be given later.


Grading Scheme All assignments are graded using a grading rubric. The rubric is
included on each assignment page online. Please ensure you review
each rubric prior to completing each assignment.

1. The E-Portfolio requirement will be as follows:
This is the grade for the overall e-Portfolio. The e-Portfolio is not due until March 3, 2019 but there are
some of the items which will have an earlier due date on Populi.

Here is a model of the sections of your final e-Portfolio:

1. Introduction

Introduction which includes:

- Write your Bio (inclusive of your academic profile)

- Insert Course Description, Student Learning Outcomes, and a copy of your syllabus (use official
one posted on Populi)

- Introduction Video Discussion


Please create an introduction video of yourself for the rest of the class. Please be sure to tell us:
 What you are studying.
 What you hope to get from this seminar, from your instructor, and from your colleagues.
 What you expect from yourself during this Seminar.
 What 3 things would you promote for the Cayman Islands?

2. Post Written Reflection #1- PRIDE Workshop I


Your paper should be one page in APA style. You will need a cover page separately.
Kindly answer the following:
 What did you learn?
 How can you relate what you learnt to what you read in the textbook, “Founded upon the
Seas”?
 What were the most interesting aspects of this day

Neither introduction nor abstract will be needed. You will need a Reference Page.

Normally, first person is not allowed in APA writing, but for this assignment, it is permitted.

3. Post Written Reflection #2: Discussion Essay


Why Can’t We All Just Get Along?
-Make references to the text and other scholarly materials
-Give real-life examples

4. Post the Community Outreach Activity Video

Create a video (no more than 5 minutes) of your participation in the day's event. At the end, answer the

Post a minimum of 5 photos and give an explanation of each photo.

5. Post Final Project: Radio Interview

6. Create Photo Essay Album
