Herzberg’s motivation hygiene factor theory,although considered non-traditional
when it was introduced in 1959,had become one of the most used ,known and
widely respected theories for emplaning motivation and job satisfaction.

Herzberg’s theory divides motivation and job satisfaction two continuation. The

theory differentiates between factors that are considered to be intrinsic but
important to a job, such as working condition. The factors that are inherent to the
job are those that affect motivation to put in Herzberg (1968) own words “the

CHAPTER 2
REVIEW OF LITERATURE
LITERATURE REVIEW

Veldhoven 2009 these long work hours may be indicative of a strong

commitment by clergy to their congregations and community. Personal
dedication, investment in one’s job,and commitment increase job satisfaction in
clergy and religious order workers(witberg 1993). Anecdotal accounts can
certainly verify this commitment, and it is something clergyhave in common with
firefighters (Lee & Olshfski 2002).

Uncertainity of job expectations, volume of work, incompatibility of

expectations, and work family conflict increase emotional exhaustion, and un
certainity of expectations decreases job satisfaction.(Hang-Yue,Foley& Loi 2005).
Influence within the church and authority also seem to relate to job satisfaction.
This sense of control in the work place also contributed to job satisfaction in
firefighters, and autonomy was related to decreased emotional exhaustion in
those doing people work. Nelson and Everett suggest the members’s willingness
to the taught is related to job satsifactio and it has been shown that the feeling of
frustration when teaching contributes to low job satisfaction in special education
teachers.

Mental Health,Religion and Culture has a special issue dedicated to clergy

burout.Miner(2007) reports that ministers experience stress in their first year
related to their relationships with family and friends, including marital stress and
related to ministry expectations, conflicts and lossof people in the church. It is
suggested that theological students are encouraged not only to explore their
beliefs but also to integrate them before they enter the ministry. Do0little(2007)
discuss coping strategies and finds that planning, acceptance and positive
reframing related to increased personal accomplishment while self-
blame, disengagement, distaraction and denial relate to increase emotional
exhaustion and personal accomplishment suggesting that emotional exhaustion
may not mean dis-satisfaction.
Family stress certainly contributes to job satisfaction. Marital discord and
more children are related to decreased job satisfaction. Wives feel more stress
than their clergy husband when relocating, dealing especially when their own and
their children’s sense of loss and loneliness when leaving their social network.
Clergy generally express excitement about a movie while spouse express concern
over the financial burden, charging schools for the children and loss of friends as
well a lack of support from the clergy spouse. Both clergy and their wives see a
need for more and better family-ordinate support service from denomination but
wives.
