Chapter 4

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

This chapter presents the discussion based from the themes developed during

data analysis. We finally generated four (4) major themes from Focus Group Discussion

(FGD) and Individual interview for the first research question as enumerated in Table 1.

Themes and Core Ideas on the Reasons Why STEM Students Procastinate

Major Themes Core Ideas

I procastinate because sometimes I

can feel laziness towards the task and
I do something that is more important
rather than the task
I often procastinate because I have
other priorities like online games that
is more important rather than the
given task then sometimes, I feel
Laziness and Other Priorities laziness doing such things.
We rank which I more important then
Like Online Games we do them rankly and we often
procrastinate because we can feel
laziness along the way doing it.
The task that was given to me is not
important and Im a lazy person
I procrastinate because I am a lazy
person.

I often procrastinate because the tasks

are hard and I can feel laziness
towards it.

The danger of manana habit is that

you will not do what is meant to be
Failures and Cramming done and you will fail on that subject.
For me, maybe the danger of
manana habit is that you will not do
what is meant to be done and you will
get low grades.
Maybe you will be fond of cramming
and laziness.
You will cram all the time.
the only disadvantage of
procastonation is that, there are
chances that you will do that task on
last minute or hour then the outcome
of your task is not that elegant or
presentable anymore
the disadvantage of procastination is
that it can actually result to adrenaline
The output is not presentable and will rush or pressure on your task and the
result of the task is ugly or not
be fond of cramming and laziness. presentable.
The disadvantage of procastination
is that you will cram then when you
are cramming, you will have less
information towards your task and it
can actually cause failure.
Maybe you will be fond of cramming.
You will procrastinate all the time.
You will be used to become lazy
towards the task and sometimes you
cant finished it because you are tired
already.
You will become lazy towards the task
and will be used to become lazy
towards it.
I think think they need to experience failure in terms
of grades in their subjects.
Experience Failure or Getting Low teachers should fail them to wake them up.
For me, they have to experience getting low grades
Grades
so that they will realize the effects of manana habit
they have to get low grades or low scores in their
projects because their project are not beautiful, lack
of ideas or what so ever.
They have to experience low grades so that they will
realize that procastination is not a good thing to do.
They need to realize the effects of manana habit by
getting low grades in their subjects.
Maybe they will realize it when they will receive
failing grades that can actually hurt them and they
cannot pass their projects because they
procrastinate.

Laziness and Other Priorities Like Online Games

This is the strongest theme in the first research question pointed by all

informants, which means that “Laziness is a behavior describing the passive attitude of

a person with the tendency to avoid work although he/she is capable, unwilling to put

forth efforts and choosing not to work hard and lack of will power (Beghetto, 2007; Mish,

1994, Ellis. 1991). An attitude can be defined as a tendency to think, feel, and an

individual‘s response either positively or negatively towards particular objects or

situation from the cognitive, affective, and behavioral perspectives (Bidjari, 2011; Salta

& Tzougraki, 2004; Howarth, Fosters and Dorrer, 2004). A statement from Ellis (1991)

stated that the will power consists of the strong determination towards individual‘s

change, persistent of work and practice (Neenan, 2008).

Based on this study, this indicates that the main reason why students

procrastinate is because of laziness and other priorities like online games and that

means that consequently, we are more likely to procrastinate difficult tasks with

unenjoyable qualities. We like our rewards not only to be large but to be also immediate.

In short, we would more likely to put off higher priority tasks if there are options

available that are immediately pleasurable. This is also supported by the findings of
Duru & Bakis (2014) in their research revealed that passive attitudes such as lazy or

procrastination affect self regulation with relation to academic performance. By

postponing academic tasks, students would fail to control themselves which then leads

to stress, low academic performance and anxiety. However, by controlling their habits

and routine in any given task, it would lead to the implementation of action in oneself

(Sommer, 2013). Thus, by self-regulating oneself with routine and effort, a person could

avoid from becoming lazy.

Failures and Cramming

This theme refers to an event where burning the midnight oil and cramming for a
test seems to be a rite of passage in high school and college. Some students
say they prefer these last-minute marathon study sessions because they force
them to focus. Others simply procrastinate until they have no other choice.
However, cramming for a test not only isn't healthy, it also doesn't help you to
perform better on the test -- or in the class in the long run (Magher,2013).
Also, cramming can also result to failures of students. The results that students hope to get by cramming are not

achieved. Houghton College reports that students who cram for tests are at a disadvantage on test day because

they're nervous, tired and probably hungry. They also have likely had little practice with recall and application and

have not had the opportunity to remember the material. Therefore, they perform more poorly on tests. Shorter, repeat

study sessions are a much more effective way to prepare and will result in higher scores (Milson, 2009).

The output is not presentable and will be fond of cramming and laziness

This theme is considered as the impact of bad effects of procrastination.

According to the responses of our participants, one of the bad effects of procrastination

is that the output is not presentable at all and these can also be the result of laziness. It

is proven that a passive attitude means a tendency to react negatively in their thinking,

feeling and responses towards commitment and achievement. Although a lazy person

has the tendency in reacting negatively towards certain event, it has been reported that
this internal attribute could be controlled (Reyna, 2000). She suggested that laziness

could be elaborated more from the self-esteem, motivation, attitudes in thinking and

behavioral perspectives. That means, laziness is closely related to self-regulation within

oneself. Any action taken was based on their decision to make it happen or just letting it

go without any achievement. Their commitment towards any task or activity is the

results of how they self-regulate or control themselves towards achievement. The

challenges would make them competent within themselves or when compared to

others.

Also, lazy students would fail to control or regulate themselves towards commitment

and finally they would not achieve anything that would make them satisfied. Hence, this

low motivation in desire and self-regulation would involve them in procrastination, social

and disciplinary problems and finally would affect their performance in academic

(Alpkan, 2011).

Experience Failure or Getting Low Grades

This theme means that because of procrastination, students are now used to cram

and they don’t actually know the negative effects of it. So enable them to realize, they

should experience getting low grades because of cramming. Cramming leads to information

overload. Like a sponge that can only retain so much water, your mind can only retain so much information.

Muskingum College says you can only concentrate for about 20 minutes before this information overload sets in and

you are unable to make efficient use of your time. Not only are you causing yourself a lot of stress and anxiety by

staying up half the night trying to cram, but you are also wasting your time so you failed on your task (Mulk, 2012).

On the other hand, some students are not afraid of failure because they believe that their creative juices will help

them when the deadline is next to them but few students only say this so that they can use it as an excuse for their

laziness (Saco, 2017).
