During WWII Japanese forces invaded
Vietnam.
After the defeat of the Japanese, Ho Chi
Minh saw an opportunity and rose up with
his Viet Minh forces and took Hanoi a

Ho Chi Minh was a communist.
Bao Dai was backed by the West and
believed strongly in capitalism.
This caused a divide between the two leaders
and their respective sides.
The split between the communist North and
the French backed South would lead to
significant fighting
The North would eventually win a decisive
battle and a treaty was signed in 1954, that
divided the country along the 17th parallel.
The treaty also called for nationwide
elections to reunify to be held in 1956.

was pushed aside and replaced with the
extremely anti-communist Ngo Dinh Diem.

Vietnam.

stop its spread.
