If ordinary filter paper, instead of ashless paper were used, how would your experimental
results be affected? Would they be too high or too low? Explain your answer.
- Ashless filter paper is pure cellulose and will decompose in the presence of heat and
air to water and carbon dioxide. No residual non-volatile substances remain. where as
in case of ordinary filter paper ashes remain and the results will be high because of
the ashes. AgNO3 is added to precipitate NaCl present in the BaSO4 it should
dissolve and cause a precipitate of AgCl in the wash water. Barium sulfate is filtered
from a hot solution since the speed of filtration is greater at the higher temperature
(the solubility loss is insignificant).
2. Why are the washes of the barium sulfate tested with AgNO3
