Provide the reason for carryover in the column below:
It is essential that reasons be provided by carryover requests
Strategic Planning: We have reserved and committed funds into 2010 to complete major projects underway. It
has been a strategic decision by the Network’s Steering Committee to retain funds for a carry over year.
Contract: Pending finalization of the Network’s contract, the Network did not have access to non‐ARC funding
in 2005‐06, and this ARC account was used as a place‐holder for various Network expenditure. Throughout
2007‐09, the ARC account was adjusted via journals.
Provision of General Non‐Cash Contributions by Member Institutions:
IN‐KIND Contributions from Administrating Organization – The University of Queensland – include:
• Office space for Network Convenor, Network Manager and casual administrative assistance
• Electricity, water, maintenance, security, cleaning
• Administrative, technical, equipment
It is the responsibility of the Research Network to ensure that the carryover amount requested in this
document has been discussed with the Administering Organisation’s Research Office and that it is
consistent with the carryover amount, which is forwarded electronically, and in hard copy, to the ARC in a
separate End of Year Report.

ARC Centre of Excellence for a Data Rich Society
Society is undergoing a major shift towards new data‐intensive environments for scientific, business and
personal applications, underpinned by the popularity of the Internet. Scientists are generating vast amounts
of data using new devices and simulation models, individuals are connecting together to create an abundance
of content for the World Wide Web, and business organizations are trying to make sense of diverse streams of
information. We are presented with a challenge of comprehending overwhelming amounts of data. New
solutions are required to manage this challenge.
There already exist a range of techniques for data management and processing. The database community has
investigated issues in data integration and processing for several decades. There have been some spectacular
successes, resulting in mainstream database products and services and the ubiquitous adoption of database
systems as an indispensable component of today’s information infrastructure. However, these traditional
techniques have not kept pace with recent changes. There have been dramatic increases in data complexity,
heterogeneity and connectivity. People’s expectations and needs about data utility and quality also become
very diverse, from simple queries and tabular reports on a single data source in the past to complex data
analysis using correlations, clustering, trends and non‐trivial knowledge across many data sources. A clear
indication that the emerging data rich society requires the new generation information infrastructure is that
more and more businesses, scientists and decision makers are spending significant amount of time in
managing data, sometimes developing their own data management solutions. There is a significant gap
between Australia’s major national investment in computing, data generation and capturing, data storage and
communication infrastructures, such as new broadband network, scientific instruments, data centres and
supercomputing facilities, and the support to let day‐to‐day users understand, use and benefit from the data
(rather than being forced to manage the scale, diversity and quality of the data).
Research investment in data management and computer networks from late 60s to early 90s laid the
foundation of the current generation of information infrastructure. Now history presents a major R&D
opportunity for us to develop the next generation of information infrastructure. This Centre aims to develop
new paradigms to address the needs of the data rich society. In particular, this will result in the development
of theory and algorithms that will lead to the production of new tools and techniques to advance the state of
the art in managing and making sense of data. It will address major challenges with respect to data volume,
large scale knowledge discovery, data consistency, data privacy and data trust which are common across a
large range of application domains. The Centre will bring together an outstanding team of researchers in high
performance computation, databases, knowledge discovery, privacy, as well as internationally recognised
experts and leading‐edge users in several key data‐intensive application domains: biomedical, business and
water resources management. The establishment of the Centre has the potential to bring considerable
benefits to Australia. Individuals, communities and organisations will be better equipped to form hypotheses,
make evidence based decisions and understand their consequences in a data‐intensive environment. Such
decisions may draw upon both private and public data and require the efficient processing of large amounts of
complex and possibly incomplete information. Decision making can be made with stronger guarantees about
quality, security and trust.
In particular, the proposed Centre will address several challenges that face Data‐rich Societies:
Program‐1: Managing data volume, complexity,
Program-5: Application Focus
Program-3: Security Privacy and Trust
Page 73
ARC Research Network in Enterprise Information Infrastructure: Annual Report 2009
due to lack of support, inflexibility or poor performance. Unfortunately, this trend means that low‐level data
management functions need to be repeated again and again at the application level. New techniques for
information management and middleware are needed to connect and query massive repositories generated
by high throughput scientific instruments with different levels of data quality. For example, next generation
DNA sequencing machines can generate terabytes of output per day. The value of this information will be lost,
unless accompanying integration and access methods are developed. This change calls for new data
management approaches that should support lightweight and incremental data fusion for very large amounts
of dynamic data from different sources, with built‐in support for data quality management that can offer
organizational, architectural and computational solutions to ensure controllable and understandable data
quality. It will at the core of the next generation information infrastructure for a data rich society.
Program‐2: Data analysis and actionable knowledge discovery: This research aims at liberating the user from
managing data, moving towards making sense of the data. Advances in this area in last two decades brought
us to the eve of new breakthroughs in theory, algorithms and methodologies of knowledge discovery for the
emerging data rich society, most likely in large scale and multi‐source data mining, multimedia and
spatiotemporal data mining, and new techniques considering cost‐sensitive, quality‐aware, privacy‐preserving
and domain‐specific requirements. The program will advocate knowledge discovery based on advanced
computing infrastructure such as the cloud, and develop effective data mining solutions for various application
domains to generate actionable knowledge discovery. Our new research in this program will make full use of
domain expert knowledge, which is not considered enough in the current knowledge discovery algorithms and
methodologies. This novel methodology will use both technical interestingness and business interestingness
for mining criteria and interactive mining process, enabling evidence‐based quality decisions in a timely
fashion across applications domains.
Program‐3: Security, Privacy and Trust: Enhancing the quality of decision making relies on the timeliness,
reliability and the integrity of the data being used. Given the large amount of data that are being used from a
diverse range of sources in decision making, properties such as security, trust and privacy have become critical
in the digital economy. A fundamental issue is the level of trust that can be placed on the data that is being
used in the decision making systems. There is a clear need to develop new trust models and evaluation
algorithms for determining the trustworthiness of different types of data coming from different sources in an
Internet scale system. We also need to develop novel ways of combining and aggregating the trust for data
coming from different levels of trusted sources for different applications. Another major challenge is how to
ensure that the privacy of data is maintained in a large scale Internet type application, where there are
different levels of privacy requirements for the subjects of the data, ranging from individuals to enterprises to
Government agencies. The scale of information we are dealing in this Centre will require new techniques for
ensuring security and privacy in large scale peer to peer federated systems. Developing large scale
trustworthy secure systems is still in its infancy and much research needs to be done not only in the design of
security and trust models and their evaluation, but also in the areas of security and trust policy management
especially when it comes to distributed applications under multiple jurisdictions. There is also a need to
develop new techniques that can efficiently verify and guarantee the security and trust properties of data in
such large systems. Hence Security, Privacy and Trust form a core part of a Data Rich Society like Australia and
our Centre will make significant contributions in this area thereby enabling the quality of decision making for
individuals, enterprises and government agencies.
Program‐4: Complexity of processing: The sheer size of data, the modalities of data and the nature of
processing demands new computational techniques that can exploit the distributed computation
infrastructure offered by cloud computing. These new techniques might need to gather information from
several sources and at the same time process the information while it is being gathered. We anticipate that
tomorrow’s computational infrastructure will consist of a number of powerful data centres that are
geographically distributed, with smaller replicated data stores caching the data. Data centres will be located
near cheap green energy, and will share their load globally. Users will be able to execute complex queries by
remote connections (on devices ranging from mobiles to desktops), executing time consuming data modelling
and analytics using cloud services. Computation power will be delivered on demand, matching data locality
with energy and resource availability, using virtualization as a key technology. Derived data (produced by
models) and captured data (produced by instruments) will be handled by a seamless infrastructure, allowing
users to abstract simulations and real world experiments. We will develop techniques to advance these goals,
providing computation techniques that will be responsive and cost effective with low energy costs.
Program‐5: Application focus: The continued exponential growth of computational power, data‐generation
sources, and communication technologies is giving rise to a new era in information processing: data‐intensive
computing. Data‐intensive computing promises not just an evolutionary change in informatics but also a
Page 74
ARC Research Network in Enterprise Information Infrastructure: Annual Report 2009
revolutionary change in the way researchers gather and process information, from the hardware and
algorithms to the presentation of knowledge to the end user. Applications in many disciplines are driving a
shift in the emphasis of data‐intensive computing from focusing solely on large datasets to the broader realm
of issues dealing with the time to reach a solution when data‐handling capacity is a significant factor, such as
required real‐time processing of massive data streams. Data‐intensive computing facilitates human
understanding of complex problems. Data‐intensive applications provide timely and meaningful analytical
results in response to exponentially growing data complexity and associated analysis requirements through
the development of new classes of software, algorithms, and hardware. In many application domains, data
volumes that must be processed have grown to the petabyte scale while, simultaneously, computational
models and algorithms have pushed the performance of existing computer architectures. The Centre will have
a concrete focus on several application areas: Our initial focus will be related to Commerce (Capital Markets)
and biomedical applications. The initial data types that we would be focusing on will include text, scientific
data consisting of numerical, symbolic and graph structures (e.g. protein‐protein interaction graphs) and
medical images of MRI.
This Centre will be cross disciplinary. Its CIs and PIs are world leading computer scientists, Engineers and
Medical Scientists. The value of large scale knowledge discovery was recently emphasised by the Working
Group of the Prime Minister’s Science, Engineering and Innovation Council (PMSEIC), who released a report
“From Data to Wisdom: Pathways to Successful Data Management for Australian Science”. The Director of the
proposed Centre was a member of this PMSEIC working group.

Title: Massive Data and Data Intensive Super Computing
Abstract: Recent years, data‐intensive super computing systems (DISCS) have been created by Google
and its competitors in response to the rapidly growing in dataset size and the need of high
performance analyzing of massive datasets. DISCSs are different from conventional
supercomputers since they acquire and maintain continually changing data sets and perform
large‐scale computations over the data. DISCSs open up new opportunities to achieve great
advances in science, biology and health care, industry and business efficiencies, and so on,
and it has become a new research field in the 21 century. This talk will discuss the concepts,
motivation, challenges and research issues of DISCS. Some our solutions are also presented.

Title: Software in Internet Age in China
Abstract: Internet has becoming a crucial information infrastructure of modern society. In the past
decade, middleware has been recognized as a basic solution to meet the challenges for
Internet computing, such as Internet‐scale application, ubiquitous computing capability and
constantly changes in system requirement. The first part of this talk present our
understanding of distributed object computing middleware technology, as well as an
introduction to our practices through the research and development around StarBus+, PKUAS,
WebSASE and ONCE. With the rising of new computing paradigms, such as P2P and Grid
computing, we have put forward several novel research programs on the software foundation
of Internet‐scale resource sharing and collaboration, including: internetware, iVCE and
CROWN. The rest of this talk will focus on our understanding and perspective of next
generation Internet computing platform. We believe that the new paradigm will come from
the convergence of diverse approaches, interplay between IT and other disciplines and the
constantly changing and emerging visions.

Title: Making Lemons into Lemonade: implications for teaching in a research‐intensive university
Abstract: In research‐intensive universities such as those in the Chinese 98‐5 project and the Australian
Go8, it sometimes appears that teaching has to take second place behind the demands of
research. For example: academics' time focuses on research; discretionary university funds
are allocated to research facilities. We explore how these realities can be managed and turned
to advantage in key teaching‐related matters such as selection of staff, curriculum design and
budget management.

Location‐Based Social Networks Take Off
By Rob Knies
December 9, 2009 2:00 PM PT
Many millions of computer users around the world have incorporated social networks into their everyday
lives, and it’s a safe assumption that an increasingly large proportion of those users are carrying GPS
functionality in their mobile phones.
It’s odd, then, that to upload photos, write blogs, or communicate with friends, users still often need to work
from a desktop computer. Wouldn’t it make sense to bring the two together, so those social netizens can
track and share personal location information on the go?
Xing Xie thinks so.
Xiaofang Zhou (right) of the University of Queensland, general chair of the
International Workshop on Location Based Social Networks, congratulates Chih‐
Wen Chang, of Taiwan's National Chiao Tung University. Chang presented the
paper named the best of the workshop.
That’s what spurred him, along with Xiaofang Zhou, a professor of Computer Science at Australia’s University
of Queensland, to organize the inaugural International Workshop on Location Based Social Networks (LBSN),
held in Seattle on Nov. 3 in conjunction with the Association for Computing Machinery’s 17th SIGSPATIAL
International Conference on Advances in Geographic Information Systems.
“The objective of this workshop,” explains Xie, a lead researcher at Microsoft Research Asia, “is to provide a
single forum for researchers and technologists to discuss the state of the art, present their contributions, and
set future directions in emerging innovative research for location‐based social networks.”
From all appearances, consider that goal met. Of four parallel workshops held during the conference, LBSN
drew the most attendees. During the larger conference, the workshop was cited as the “most successful” of
those associated with the conference.
“It went very well,” Xie says. “It attracted 33 registrants, and there were lots of discussions and interactions
during the workshop. Everyone seemed to think the workshop was great.”
Wen‐Chih Peng, assistant professor in the Department of Computer Science at Taiwan’s National Chiao Tung
University, concurred.
Page 90
ARC Research Network in Enterprise Information Infrastructure: Annual Report 2009
“During the LBSN workshop, we saw many interesting paper presentations and lots of interactions among
researchers all over the world,” he said. “With the increasing popularity of smartphones, we believe that LBSN
will provide a fresh frontier to explore new research topics.”
Indeed, Xie indicates that the initial experience has the organizers considering making this an annual event.
“We are discussing next year, since it was quite successful this time,” he says. “In a workshop survey asking if
those at the workshop would like to attend in the future, we got a 100‐percent yes vote.”
While held in Seattle to gain more impact by its association with the SIGSPATIAL conference, the workshop
actually supports Microsoft Research Asia’s theme of Internet Services in its collaboration projects with
universities in the Asia Pacific region. The event furthered the goal of the University Relations team at
Microsoft Research Asia to build a broader academic community in the region.
The workshop actually broadened the community of interested academics to global scale. While many
professors—representing universities from China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, and Australia— funded by the
University Relations team got an opportunity to present their work and, in many cases, to provide leadership
as part of the program committee, the event also attracted faculty members from the United States and
Europe.
LBSN Defined
The workshop’s Web site defines LBSN as “social network services where people can track and share location‐
related information with each other, via either mobile or desktop computers. As location is one of the most
important aspects for people’s everyday lives, a lot of novel application scenarios can be supported by LBSN.
For example, we can collect and share more trustworthy location recommendations within LBSN and use
them to rank interesting locations and to discover new places, people, and activities.”
With the workshop having concluded, Xie takes an opportunity to elaborate.
“You could track and share your travel trajectory with your friends in real time,” he says, “and they would
know where you are from their phones. And you can also share comments, status, and photos, together with
your location information.
“Another example is recommendations. When you are in a new city, you could receive suggestions about a
good restaurant that has been visited by your friends and that matches your preference.”
The Web site also cites a long list of potential topics of interest for this and, potentially, subsequent
workshops, ranging from spatial data mining and knowledge discovery, to geo‐tagged multimedia mining, to
location privacy, data sharing , and security.
The workshop itself was organized into four paper sessions of four presented papers each:
• Understanding Users in LBSN.
• Understanding Trajectories in LBSN.
• Understanding Multimedia in LBSN.
• Applications of LBSN.
A presentation titled Mining Trajectory Profiles for Discovering User Communities—written by Peng in
conjunction with his National Chiao Tung University colleagues Chih‐Chieh Hung and Chih‐Wen Chang—was
named best paper of the workshop. But all 16 papers delivered—eight long, eight short—were focused on the
goal of bringing social networking into real life by enabling experiences that can be shared more conveniently.
This work dovetails with the research vision espoused by Xie and his Microsoft Research Asia colleagues,
summarized in the words “build intelligence from the physical world.”
New Intelligence, New Opportunities
This means, Xie says, that context‐aware computing seeks to link changes in the environment with computer
systems. Computing systems become more intelligent through analysis and reaction to the physical world
surrounding them, and the arrival of cloud computing brings new opportunities to this area. Accumulation
and aggregation of physical‐world contextual information from multiple users and multiple devices over a
long period can provide collective social intelligence.
“Based on this, more innovative Internet services can be developed to facilitate people’s everyday lives,” Xie
says. “At Microsoft Research Asia, we are working on various technologies with a view to managing physical‐
Page 91
ARC Research Network in Enterprise Information Infrastructure: Annual Report 2009
world information and building intelligence from them. We link data generated by different people, services,
or sensors, based on a unified knowledge model, and provide the intelligence as a service in the cloud.
“LBSN can be one particular example of our vision, by building intelligence from human trajectories and
helping social‐networking services.”
Xie has been mining this territory since 2007, when he observed the power of adding location and mobile
access to social networks. Since then, the convergence has advanced rapidly. It is said that more than 40
percent of mobile phones will have GPS capability by 2011 and that location‐based services will mushroom to
a market of 13 billion by 2013.
One of the projects his team has spearheaded, GeoLife, an effort led by Yu Zheng, has already explored this
area, and others are sure to follow, given the success of the workshop.
During the event, Xie served as program chair, while Gang Guan, a University Relations manager, acted as
local chair.
In addition, Xie served as chair for the Applications of LBSN paper session and delivered a welcome speech to
attendees and participants. Guan also spoke, introducing Microsoft Research Asia and its university
collaboration programs.
‘Very Good Results’
“Early this year,” Guan says, “Microsoft Research Asia sponsored eight projects regarding location‐based
services across the Asia Pacific region as part of the Internet Services theme program. We’re glad that those
projects produced very good results in such a short time.”
Iqbal Mohomed, a post‐doctoral researcher at Microsoft Research Silicon Valley, was one of 12 members of
the workshop’s program committee. Others representing Microsoft Research Asia for the event were Lei
Zhang, lead researcher; Zheng, an associate researcher; and Xin Zou, principal development manager.
Of the 16 papers delivered during LBSN, three were written all or in part by Microsoft Research Asia
personnel:
• Trajectory Simplification Method for Location‐Based Social Networking Services, by Zheng.
• Joint Learning User's Activities and Profiles from GPS Data, by intern Vincent W. Zheng, Yu Zheng,
and Qiang Yang, who, like Vincent Zheng, represented The Hong Kong University of Science and
Technology.
• Visualizing Textual Travelogue with Location‐Relevant Images, by Xin Lu, Yanwei Pang, and Qiang
Hao of Tianjin University, along with Zhang.
Five other LBSN papers were produced under the Internet Services theme.
In short, the workshop proved a quite rewarding for all concerned.
“People are really excited about this direction,” Xie says, “and a lot of good work is just starting. We can see
great potential.”
