Imperative Sentence

The imperative is a type of a sentence that gives advice or instructions that


express request or command. An imperative sentence typically begins with the
base form of a verb, as in Go now!

An imperative sentence ends with a period or with an exclamation point.


The subject of the imperative is you, but we don’t include you in the
sentence. Example: go.

 POSITIVE IMPERATIVES - to form a positive imperative, use the base form


of the verb.
Examples: read, listen, put, run, walk, move, eat...

 Negative Imperatives -To form a negative imperative we use:

NOTE: The contraction for do not is don’t.

Do not speak Spanish in the class. = Don’t speak Spanish in the class.
Do not sit there. = Don’t sit there.
Do not lean out of the window. = Don’t lean out of the window.
