red two line "MOSKOU" despatch handstamp, struck with  "AUS RUSSLAND / FRANCO-
TOUT" in black (Van Der Linden fig. 326) at Tilsit with fair transit of same on reverse (June 24).

2877 1847 (June 12): Printed "Circulaire" from the Russian Minister of Finances in St. Petersburg,
mailed to the Russian Consul General in Corfu, Ionian Islands and struck on reverse
(displaying well) with framed "St. PETERSBURG" despatch in black and, on front, with
manuscript rates and "CORFU" arrival cds (July 16). An unusual and fine entire.

2878 1857/58: 10 kop. deep brown & blue, imperforate in a deep fresh shade with large margins
all round, used on attractive 1858 cover from Zhitomir to Prince Radzivill (as in the Kennedy
family) in Minsk, tied by boxed and dated "ZHITOMIR" cancellation (May 19) in black. A
superb cover in wonderful Exhibition quality. Cert. RPS (1998).

2881 1860 (Dec 16): Cover from Taganrog addressed to Tabriz, Persia; franked by 1858 10 kop.
brown & blue, perf. 12 1/2, tied by rectangular dotted 121' handstamp of Taganrog with
despatch cds on reverse in black. Addressed to one "Theodore Vlasto, Tabriz, Persia, the
cover was mailed prior to overseas postal arrangements being first installed by the Russian
P.O. (1863). The cover was prepaid as far as the Persian border at Djulfa and would then have
been carried by messenger to Tabriz (where Russia had a Consular Office). An extraordinary
and rare cover. Only three items known.
Note: The Vlasto family lived on Chios until 1822 when the Greeks there were forcibly
removed (or killed) by the Ottomans. The Vlasto's had married into famous families
noted in both collecting and correspondence circles, namely the Mavrogordato, Ralli and

2882 1868 (Sept): Cover from Hapsal to Bouverie, Geneva, Switzerland franked by 1865
5 k. black & pale lavender and 20 k. deep blue & deep orange tied by "Hapsal" cyrillic
datestamps in black. "Aus Russland / über BUR. XI EDK. BRG" transit on front (Sept 2)
and reverse with various transits and Geneva (4/9) arrival cds.

2883 1866: 1 kopek black & yellow, variety: imperforate with hugely shifted background, used
on small piece and cancelled by Moscow datestamp (17th April 1872) in black. Faults at
sides due to separation and some thinning but just 300 stamps were issued thus in Moscow
and nearly all are faulty due to splitting of the sheets by hand. A major rarity of Imperial
Russian philately. Signed on reverse.

2885 1866: 1 k.  black & yellow (4, one with short perf) and 10 k. brown & blue on 1873 envelope
to Switzerland, tied by cds from Moscow (July 13) with red Prussian "AUS RUSSLAND 27
7 73" on front and three Moscow marks as well as the Aarau receiver (July 29) on reverse

2886 1869 (Jan 13/25): Cover mailed on board Train on the Moscow / St. Petersburg Railway
to Montreux / Switzerland franked by 1866 1 k. black & yellow (2), 5 k. black & lilac and
vertical pair of 10 k. brown & blue all tied by "Postal Wagon 1-2 (17)" datestamps in black.
"AUS RUSSLAND / über BUR. XI EDK BRG" transit in red (Jan 27) and manuscript "f3"
Prussian credit in red crayon on front and reverse with St. Petersburg cds and Montreux (Jan
29) arrival datestamp. A delightful and scarce cover. 18x+ 20ax+

2887 1873: Cover from Warsaw to Neuchâtel, Switzerland franked at 14 kopek rate with
1865/73 1 k. black & yellow, 3 k. black & green and 10 k. brown & blue all tied by Warsaw
datestamps; red Eisenburg transit below and '2½' sgr. Prussian credit in manuscript. Slight

2888 1871 (March 13): 10 k. black postal stationery envelope mailed to Helsinki, Finland (May
12) cancelled from Perovsk Kre. (post?, unclear) with repeated similar strike alongside
(Krepost = Fort). Perovsk is in central Asia (Kazakhstan) and this cover is a very early usage
from the East prior to the Railway construction being completed, thus the transit time of 45
days. An unusual cover that would benefit from further research. = 1 452)

2889 1875 (June 10/22): Registered cover from Riga to Betschwanden, Rüti, Switzerland franked
by 1866 horizontally laid 1 k. black & yellow (2) and two vertical pairs of 20 k. blue &
orange all tied by "Riga" cyrillic datestamps in black with registration cachet above and
straight line "FRANCO" at right. German red registration label applied in transit (Russia
had no registration labels until 1899) and reverse with three large red wax seals of Swiss
Consulate in Riga alongside Glarus arrival cds (June 26). The 82 kopek rate equates to a
quadruple rate (4 x 18 kopeks + 10 k. registration), with manuscript '5' sgr. weiterfranko
credit to Prussia. A superb and very rare cover.

2892 1871 (April 25):  10 k. brown postal stationery envelope, up-rated for use to Geneva /
Switzerland, and additionally franked for double rate by 1866 3 k. black & green (2, both
stamps with error of background "V" for "3") and two 10 k. brown & blue (2, each with
slight toning), all tied by two line Station Jelanj-Sagatch datetstamps. Thence via Odessa 19xF+ 21x+
(April 30) and backstamped on receipt in Geneva (May 19). Manuscript '4' in red crayon as U119xF+
credit to Prussia. A scarce cover-multiple uses of the error are most unusual. 21x+ U13/

2893 1874: Outer letter sheet at double rate from St. Petersburg to Lyon, franked by two copies of
the 1865/74 3 k. green & black vertically laid paper and a 20 k. orange & blue horizontally
laid paper, neatly tied by St. Petersburg datestamps. A fresh and fine cover. (Photo

2894 1872: 5 k. black & grey-blue used on Type 1 formular postcard, tied by Grodno (April 20)
cds sent via T.P.O. "Postal Wagon No. 5-6" to St. Petersburg with arrival on front. Slight tear

2895 1866: 30 kop. carmine rose & green on vertically laid paper, a lightly used block of four
cancelled at Pavlovsk in black; slightly nibbed perforations on lower right stamp and some

2896 1878: 8 k. grey & rose and 10 k. brown & blue on registered letter, tied with cds of Kamenetz-
Podolsk (Oct. 6), dispatched within the city as registered envelope to the court; rare local

2897 1896: Registered cover franked on reverse with Arms 10 k. blue (5) dispatched to Sven
Hedin's father in Stockholm tied by "Osh Ferghana Oblast" datestamps in blue (now part of

2898 Russo-Japanese War 1904 (Dec 11): Red band envelope sent under Military concession,
some ageing, with very fine strike of double ring circular datestamp "Siberian Army Corps
No. 4" in black. Military unit cachet on reverse in black (4th East Siberian Sapper Battalion).
Unnumbered "Postal Wagon Kolyushki-Lodz" cds and Lodz arrival cds (Jan 5, 1905) in
black alongside. In addition a similar cover, not quite as fine with similar markings to same

2899 1905: 20 k. blue & red and 1 rouble brown & orange on registered cover from the German
consulate in Kovno to Baukau (Germany), tied by Kovno cds's, arrival on reverse. Dotted
"R" and registration label alongside, in addition a handwritten "AR" and a lilac handstamp
"registered cover accompanied by recepisse" showing that an acknowledgement of receipt

2900 1905: Bulletin d'Expédition of a value parcel franked by Arms 7 k. blue (2) and 1 r. brown
& orange tied by "Nishni Novgorod Fair" datestamps, used to Jerusalem with ROPiT Jaffa

2901 1907: 10 k. blue stationery envelope, with the imprinting procedure for the blue colour
omitted (albino impression), while the underlying embossing was already done: with

2902 1909: 3 k. stationery postcard, cut in the wrong position leading to partial imprints of the
arms and the imprinted stamp on top and bottom of the card, dispatched July 1917 with oval
postmark T.P.O. "Riga-40-Petrograd" to Katarin, readdressed to Vezo Estland Gubernia.

Nobel company in St. Petersburg with mute cross cancellations of Riga, incl. a registered

10 k. blue and 8k. brown showing a Soviet Air Mail label and two German crimson Air
