INTAKE DESIGN

Input Data:

Decsription Value Units Remarks

Design Discharge (qdesign) = 165 m3/sec
Extra Discharge for Flushing(%) = 15%
Gross Discharge (Qgross) = 189.75 m3/sec
Coefficient of Discharge (Cd) = 0.8
Maximum Permissible Velocity (Vmax) = 1 m/sec
Assume Clogging of Intake = 20 %
No. of opening = 3 Nos.
Factor of Safety = 1.2
Ai = Area of proposed Opening From Which the design discharge passes.
Vi = Velocity through the Opening.
g = Acceleration Due to Gravity.
Let,
Wi = Width of Intake Opening
Di = Depth of Intake Opening

Let,
Di = Depth Of Opening = 10.00 m
Therefore,
Wi = Qgross/(Di*Cd*Vi)
or, Wi = 23.719 m
For 20% Clogging Case,
Wi = 28.463 m
For Each Opening,
Wi = 9.488 m
Therefore,
Final Dimension of Intake:
Depth = 10.00 m
Total Width = 29.0 m
Width of each opening = 10.0 m
Nos. of Opening = 3

Check For Velocity:

Q = 189.75
D = 10
W = 30.000
V = Q/(W*D*Cd)
= 0.791 Should Be Less than Maximum Permissible Velocity.
OK

Calculation of Factor of Safety:

Required Area for flow of design discharge = 189.75

Calculated and Provided Area = 300

There Fore,
Factor of Safety: = Provided Area / Required Area
= 1.581
OK
Design Discharge, Qd = 165 m3/sec
Extra Discharge for flushing = 15%
Total Discharge through Intake, Q = 189.75 m3/sec

Velocity Through Intake, V = 1 m/sec

a = 0.725 for assymetrical inflow
Depth of Intake, d = 10 m

Based on emperical formula for minimum submergence to ensure vortex-free inflow

Submergence Required, S = a*v*sqrt(d)
= 2.29
= 3m
below the lowest water level

Based on Relative Submergence Criteria

Fraude Number, Fr = 0.10 OK
Relative Submergence Required, S/d > (0.5+0.4Fr)
S/d > 0.54
S/d = 0.3
So, increase Submergence
Submergence Required, S = 6m
S/d = 0.6 OK
