5.Aim of Subject To provide adequate knowledge for the students to understand the
principles of operation and construction of direct and alternating
current motors and transformers and control and drive the AC and
DC motors.
6. Learning At the completion of the subject, students should be able to:

 LO1 – Recognize symbols frequently used on motor and
control diagrams.
 LO2 – Understand the terminology and apply the selection
of appropriable electric motor for desired load.
 LO3 – Understand the basic electric motor operating
principle.
 LO4 – Apply single phase and three phases transformers
as parts of a motor power and control circuit.
 LO5 – Identify contactor , motor starter, manually
operated switches, mechanically operated switches and
different types of sensors commonly found in motor
control circuits.
 LO6 – Discuss the use of relays as control elements in
motor control circuits.
 LO7 – Discuss and apply the methods of motor starting,
stopping, reversing and jogging.
 LO8 – Analyze , design, and implement the motor control
systems..

Understanding Electrical Drawings
Symbols, abbreviations, ladder diagrams; wiring, single
line and block diagrams; motor terminal connections; 4
motor nameplate and terminology; manual and magnetic
motor starters.
Motor Transformers and Distribution Systems
Power distribution systems; transformer principles; 8
transformer connections and systems.
Motor Control Devices 6
Manually operated switches; mechanically operated
switches; sensors, actuators.
Electric Motors
Motor principle; direct current motors; three-phase
alternating current motors; single-phase alternating

current motors; alternating current motor drives; motor
selection; motor installation; motor maintenance and
troubleshooting.
Contactors and Motor Starters
Magnetic contactor; contactor ratings, enclosures and

solid-state types; motor starters (magnetic motor starters,
motor over-current protection, motor overload relays).
Relays
Electromechanical control relays; solid-state relays; 4
timing relays; latching relays; relay control logic.
Motor Control Circuits
NEC motor installation requirements; motor starting;

motor reversing and jogging; motor stopping; motor
speed.
Adjustable-Speed drives and PLC Installation
AC motor drive fundamentals; Variable-Frequency-Drives
(VFD) installation and programming; DC motor drive 8
fundamentals; programmable logic controllers (PLCs).
