COURSE OUTLINE – WINTER 2019

Science 9 includes four units with content in the areas of Biology, Chemistry, Physics,
and Earth Science. Each of the units described will include daily worksheets, lab
activities, a project and a test. There will be a final exam in June.

2. Physics: Electrical current is the flow of electric charge

 Static Electricity
 Batteries
 Circuits - Series and Parallel
 Ohm's Law - Voltage, Current, Resistance

3. Chemistry: The electron arrangement of atoms impacts their chemical nature.

 Periodic table organization
 Properties of elements
 Electron arrangements
 Ionic and covalent compounds

4. Biology: Cells are derived from cells

 asexual reproduction:
o mitosis
o different forms
 sexual reproduction:
o meiosis human
o sexual reproduction

5. Earth Science: The biosphere, geosphere, hydrosphere, and atmosphere are

interconnected
 The effect of solar radiation
 Biotic and abiotic components of ecosystems
 Matter cycles
 Sustainability of ecosystems
 First People's knowledge of interconnectedness

EVALUATION
As we work through the four units in this course, we will help students to master the
Content as well as achieve the following Curricular Competencies:
 Questioning and predicting:
o to ask questions and demonstrate intellectual curiosity based on their own
experiences
o to make predictions and formulate hypotheses based on their questions

 Planning and conducting:

o to plan and conduct experiments involving accurately recording
qualitative observations and quantitative data

 Processing and analyzing data and information

o to analyze and evaluate data by identifying sources of error, applying
First Peoples ways of knowing, seeking connections and representing
patters

 Evaluating
o Evaluate the validity and limitations of a model or analogy in relation to
the phenomenon modelled

 Applying and innovating

o to transfer learning to new situations

 Communicating
o to communicate ideas by connecting them to place and using appropriate
scientific language
At the end of each term students will self-assess and be assessed as to whether they are
“not yet meeting”, “approaching”, “fully meeting”, or “exceeding” these expectations.

EXPECTATIONS FOR SCIENCE 9

 Show respect to your classmates, your teacher and the material.

 Be in class on time with ALL your material, along with your calculator

 Homework has to be completed every day. It will be checked randomly. Each

homework will be evaluated on mark of 5. Projects will count more depending on
the length of the project. I will still accept a project in the next three days of the
due date. However, a 10% penalty per day will apply.

 Work missed during absence has to be done as soon as possible. You can look on
the homework website to find out what you missed or email me directly. Be
responsible for making arrangements for missed quizzes and tests.

 Cell phones cannot replace your calculator and shouldn’t be seen in class. Please
put them away before coming in my class. If I see it, it will be given to the school
administration.

 If you need extra help, come and see me at lunch or after school as soon as
possible.
