Tutorial Sheet -1

1. Calculate the specific volume, enthalpy and entropy for 5 bar saturation
pressure and dryness fraction 0.3. Also mention the saturation temperature
corresponding to this pressure.
2. Calculate the specific volume, enthalpy and entropy for 2000C saturation
temperature and dryness fraction 0.4. Also mention the saturation pressure
corresponding to this temperature.
3. Calculate heat supplied, cycle efficiency, work ratio, heat ratio and specific
steam consumption for Carnot Cycle working between pressures 30 bar and
0.04 bar for a) 100% efficiency of compressor and turbine b). 80%
efficiency of compressor and turbine.
4. Calculate heat supplied, cycle efficiency, work ratio, heat ratio and specific
steam consumption for Rankine Cycle working between pressures 30 bar
and 0.04 bar for a) 100% efficiency of compressor and turbine b). 80%
efficiency of compressor and turbine. Assume that the liquid at the entry to
pump is saturated.
5. Calculate ideal cycle efficiency, specific steam consumption, work ratio and
heat ratio for ideal Rankine cycle with superheat. The operating pressures
are 30 bar and 0.04 bar. The superheat temperature is 4500C.
6. For above mentioned cycle calculate same four parameters if reheat is added
and assume that first expansion is carried out still we receive dry saturated
steam at the exit of the high pressure turbine. Reheat temperature is also
4500C.
7. Calculate same four parameters for simple regenerative cycle without
superheat and reheat but for the same above mentioned pressure levels with
turbine entry at dry saturated steam. Regeneration is carried out at average
temperature of boiler and condenser.
8. . A steam plant receives steam at 41 bar and 4000C. After expansion to 17
bar, it is reheated to 4000C, and then expanded to 7 bar bar. It is then
reheated to 4000C, after which it expands down to back pressure of 0.055
bar. Assuming frictionless adiabatic expansion, find the thermal efficiency
of the plant and the turbine work output.
9. A 850 MW steam power plant operates with turbine inlet at 100 bar,
5500 C and condenser pressure at 0.05 bar. There are three feed water heaters
placed optimally as follows (i) the hp heater is of closed type with drains
cascaded backward, (ii) the ip heater is of open type, and (iii) the lp heater is
of the closed type with drains pumped forward. Each of the turbine sections
has the same isentropic efficiency of 90%. The pumps have isentropic
efficiencies of 80%. Calculate (a) the mass flow rate of steam at turbine
inlet, (b) the mass flow rate of cooling water in the condenser, if it
0
undergoes a temperature rise of 10 C , (c) the cycle efficiency and (d) the
cycle heat rate.
