FBA: Functional Behavioral Assessment

-Relationship from problem behavior & what happens before and after.

- The teacher find a student who is disruptive every class and it can upset or disrupt the

entire classroom. Teachers need to identify what the reason for the behavior is because

consequences can either increase the behavior or decrease the the behavior in general. Teachers

tend to identify the solution easier once they recognize what and why the behavior is occurring.

-Collect data (shows you can make decisions) through ABC Analysis, pull behavior record to see

if there is a pattern.

-Antecedent: any situation, action, or event that immediately precedes a behavior

-Behavior: An observable or measurable act

-Consequence: A response, action, or event that immediately follows a behavior.

-Behavior Principles

-Positive Reinforcement: where teachers can increase the probability that behavior will

occur in the future. Positive reinforcement is often thought as a reward.

-Negative Reinforcement: A teacher will use negative reinforcement when something is

removed or unpleasant, like losing reward, or not earning positive reinforcement.

-Positive Punishment: Teachers will use positive punishment when they provides

something that is unpleasant.

-Negative Punishment: A teacher uses negative punishment when they remove something
that is pleasant, like making the student take a time out in a game.

-find a pattern

-find a repeated pattern or action that the student does before the behavior outburst. Find

out a reason why the student makes this behavior outburst.

-Make decision about function (use function matrix.)

- This is when the teacher includes a reinforcement to replace the behavior that replaces the

behavior with the new function. Teachers run into trouble finding a replacement behavior that

the student might not be able to perform and also trying to create success with what might be the

trigger.

-Avoid or Access

-This is when the teacher will observe the intervention put in to place. This will

determine how well the intervention is working if it is positive or negative. If the results are

positive then stick to the intervention, if it is not working then you will need to find a different

intervention to put into place.
