Abstract

Herzberg’s Motivational-Hygiene Factors and Job Satisfaction in the Police Sector: The
Effect of Salary Increase

The increase of salary among non-commissioned police officer has gained a huge support from
the current Philippine government. These police officers are the frontage against the criminality
even if it was under attack by many critics and vilified them as rouge public servants. Hence,
this research paper studies what motivates the non-commissioned police officers of the
Philippine National Police including the level of job satisfaction using the Herzberg’s
Motivational and Hygiene Factor’s Theory. Subsequently, pay satisfaction is a motivational
factor that gained the increased performance of non-commissioned police officers. Satisfied
non-commissioned police officers create more positive working environment for organizations.
Research shows the following correlations using the Pearson correlation with the value of 0.04
and 0.12 respectively: a.) As long as the rank of non-commissioned police officers lower, they
are more motivated to do their work for money/salary, and b.) As long as the rank of non-
commissioned police officers become higher, they expect more money/salary.
The major objectives of the study were to explore the two factors: motivational factors and
hygiene factors. The motivational factors yield positive satisfaction like achievement,
advancement, work itself, recognition and growth On the other hand, the Hygiene factors are
those activity factors which are fundamental for presence of inspiration at working environment.
The research was quantitative in nature and it has focused the pay satisfaction on salary
increase of non-commissioned police officers. An adapted questionnaire was also used as a
tool for data collection. The study’s sampling is cluster sampling that was used as a research
technique, and a sample of 147 respondents were selected randomly. Research findings
indicate that the non-commissioned police officers were satisfied with their jobs because they
are fulfilled with the salary they acquire from the government, proper recognition of their
achievement and all the respect they acquire from their superior. It was also concluded that
non-commissioned police officers are motivated with money and perform well because of their
salary.
