Code used in datalink communications between electronic controls.
CAT Data Link
High speed (62.5 Kbaud) serial communications system used on new vehicle systems for module
to module data transfers.
CMS Computerized Monitoring System
Monitors switches, sensors, and electronic controls. Provides gage display, warning lights, and
diagnostic code displays.
CPU Central Processing Unit
For Cat electronics, this typically refers to the microprocessor integrated circuit in a control
module
CYL CYLinder

Model designation for a Deutsch connector.
DT Deutsch Transportation
Model designation for a Deutsch connector.
E&E/R&D Electrical & Electronic/Research & Development Department

EC1 E&E/R&D's Electronic Control test procedure

ECAP Electronic Control Analyzer Programmer
Electronic service tool used with electronic controls to display fault codes, set up features, display
parameter values, and perform diagnostics. It is laptop computer size with 8-line display and full
keyboard.
ECM Electronic Control Module
General term used to refer to the electronic module in a system. The original meaning was
"Engine Control Module".
EEPROM Electrically Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory
Electronic memory in the ECM for customer parameters, fault log, and trip recorder data.
E/H Electro-Hydraulic
Term used for electric actuated hydraulic control valves.
EMC Electro-Magnetic Compatibility
The electronic control system must not malfunction (must be compatible) in the electromagnetic
environment in which it is designed to operate. The severity of the electromagnetic environment
is defined by the EMI/RFI levels.
EMI/RFI Electro-Magnetic Interference/Radio-Frequency Interference
Electric and magnetic fields are generated by radio transmitters, microwave towers, electronic
devices on the vehicle and engine, and other sources. These fields can interfere with the proper
operation of an electronic control system if the control's EMC isn't sufficient.
EMIS Engine Management Information System
This optional ADEM II feature adds a 512K battery-backed RAM, real-time clock, RS232 port, and
software features compatible with the off-board VMIS PC. With this option, data recorded and
saved in the ECM can be downloaded to the off-board VMIS PC for analysis (events and
datalogger), and for reports (event list, trends, histograms, cumulative).
EMS Electronic Monitoring System
Provides warning lights and alarms to switched input signals.
EPROM UV light Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory
Electronic memory in the personality module for software control algorithms. Must be removed
from the ECM to reprogram.
EPTC Electronic Programmable Transmission Control
Used with the ICM (individual clutch modulation) transmissions on WTS and OHTs. It provides
automatic shifting and lockup clutch control.
EPTC IIEPTC new design
This new design adds the Cat data link and advanced diagnostics.
ESD Electro-Static Discharge
Transfer of electric charge between two objects. When one of the objects is an electronic device
it can be damaged by the charge transfer if it's not designed to safely dissipate the energy.
ETAC Electronic Traction Aid Control
Electronic control used on wheel loaders to prevent wheel slip.
EUI Electronic Unit Injector

FARC Fuel-Air Ratio Control

FLASH bulk electrically erasable programmable read-only memory

Electronic memory in the personality module for software control algorithms. Replaces EPROM
memory. Can be reprogrammed without removal from the ECM via the data link. Also used to
describe the act of programming the memory via a data link and service tool ie. “flash program
the ECM”.
