IN HONOR OF REV. ROBERT J. WELS H , S . J. ’54
Inspired by the Catholic faith in the Jesuit tradition,
The Welsh Academy serves the unique needs of early adolescent boys of modest economic means in their journey of becoming Men for Others.
Rooted in the Gospel of Jesus Christ, The Welsh Academy
shares the mission and life of Saint Ignatius High School, forming boys to grow in faith, leadership, academic excellence, and the desire for lifelong learning. Who are Welsh Academy students? The Welsh Academy serves a specific population – young adolescent boys from families of modest economic means living in the City of Cleveland or inner-ring suburbs. These students demonstrate academic promise and personal commitment, but lack the opportunities that might allow them to fully reach that promise and potential.
What grades does the academy serve?
It is a middle school – grades 6 through 8.
How many students will attend the academy?
Each class will have 20 - 25 students per class, with an eventual, total enrollment of 75.
What is the relationship with Saint
Ignatius High School? The Welsh Academy is a part of the Saint Ignatius community. Both share the same ultimate goal and mission: to form Men for Others who have come to know, love, and serve Jesus Christ.
Is The Welsh Academy a Catholic school?
The Welsh Academy is a Catholic school and teaches Catholic Theology as part of its curriculum, although the religious affiliation of the students is not a factor in admissions.
Where is The Welsh Academy located?
The Welsh Academy is part of the Saint Ignatius High School campus. The Foursquare Church, located on the southwest corner of Carroll Avenue and West 32nd Street will become home to the academy once renovations are complete. Until then, classes will be held in Gibbons Hall, which is located right next door. Welsh Academy students have access to campus facilities such as the gym, lunchroom and The Breen Center. What does a day at the academy look like? School begins at 7:30 a.m. and ends at 5:30 p.m. School days – and school years – will be longer to allow more time for teacher/student relationship building, project learning and preparation for the academic rigors of high school. Meals and transportation will be provided. What is the tuition for each student? Tuition is fully funded through the school’s endowment.
