PROGRESS REPORT ON TRAINING AND EXCHANGE OF TECHNICAL


EXPERTISE AND RESEARCH MATERIALS

The training and exchange of technical expertise and research materials proposed were:

• Training on the needs of the respective member countries and who have the expertise and
facilities.

• Exchange of expertise is proposed through visit of scientist within the ASEAN member
countries.

• Malaysia may wish to offer courses on cocoa bean grading and basic chocolate making.

• Exchange of materials is on a reciprocal basis.

BILATERAL DISCUSSION ON KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE PARTNERSHIP


BETWEEN MALAYSIAN COCOA BOARD (MCB) AND
INDONESIAN COFFEE AND COCOA RESEARCH INSTITUTE (ICCRI)

The Bilateral Discussion on Knowledge and Experience Partnership between Malaysian Cocoa
Board (MCB) and Indonesian Coffee and Cocoa Research Institute (ICCRI) was held on 26
April 2017 at the Indonesian Coffee and Cocoa Research Institute (ICCRI), Jember, East Java in
conjunction with the 'Mapping Workshop on Cocoa Productivity in Indonesia'.

The bilateral discussion was aimed to share the knowledge, expertise and experience on cocoa
research. The representatives from Malaysia consisted of five senior research officers, namely
Mr. Haya Ramba, Dr. Alias Awang, Mr. Shari Fuddin Shaari, Dr. Ahmad Kamil Mohd. Jaafar
and Dr. Rozita Osman. Indonesia was represented by ICCRI officials, Dr. Misnawi and Dr.

Agung Wahyu Susilo, Dr Ayu Paranwansa from Universiti Muslim Indonesia (UMI), Makassar
and 16 others Research Officers.

During the discussion, MCB presented five (5) papers as follows:

1. Knowledge sharing on managing cocoa research and development in Malaysia.


2. Success story on controlling cocoa pod borer (CPB) in Malaysia.
3. Management of Vascular Streak Dieback (VSD) Disease in Malaysia.
4. Management of black pod disease in Malaysia: recommendation and cost benefit analysis.
5. Efficiency management for research in cocoa plot.

While, ICCRI presented three (3) papers as follows:

1. Overview of ICCRI
2. On farm cocoa research at ICCRI
3. Downstream research at ICCRI

MCB and ICCRI agreed to report and extend the following understandings to the ASEAN Cocoa
Club (ACC):

1. MCB and ICCRI agreed to have representatives in the editorial committee of the 'Malaysian
Cocoa Journal' for Malaysia and ‘Pelita Perkebunan Coffee and Cocoa Research Journal’
for Indonesia.

2. MCB and ICCRI agreed to contribute articles in the international scientific journals.

3. MCB and ICCRI agreed to nominate representatives as the journal reviewers for scientific
papers.

4. MCB and ICCRI agreed to have frequent discussion on the development of cocoa commodity.

b. Exchange of Cocoa Hybrid Seeds

There is no report on the exchange of cocoa hybrid seeds among the ASEAN member
countries.
