STUDENT LEARNING PLAN

MATH 7

MEASURES OF LENGTH, MASS AND TIME

OBJECTIVES:
At the end of this lesson, students will be able to:
 Know the relationship of other metric units.
 Appreciate the importance of metric units in our daily lives.
 Convert measurement of length, mass and time from one unit to another.

I. PRELIMINARIES
1.1. Review: Show how to convert fraction to decimal
1.2. Focus: Measurements
1.3. Vocabulary:
Length – the distance from one end of something to another end.
Mass – a quantity or aggregate of matter usually of considerable size.
1.4. APK: What is your favorite banana? Why?
1.5. Motivation: The teacher will give pictures of different kinds of banana and ask
the students to describe it.

II. LESSON DEVELOPMENT

A. Students will understand that measurement is a method of obtaining quantitative
information which is useful in most of their daily task.
Students will be able to convert different measurements and know their relationship.
B. Broadening of concept.
Fact Level: What makes measurement important?
Concept Level: How to convert different types of measurement?
ACTIVITIES:
 Ask the students the importance of measurements and will discuss the history of
measurement.
 The teacher will present a number line that shows a metric system of length and
mass
 The teacher will ask her student to form a statement based on the number line.
Ex. 1 meter= 10 decimeters; 1 gram=1,000 milligrams
 The teacher will show how to convert measurements and let her students answer it.
 The teacher will discuss the measurement system of time.
 The teacher will show how to convert measurement of time.
 The teacher will present different real-life problems involving converting different
measurements.
-Length
-Mass
-Time

MILS Activities: Interpersonal, Kinesthetic, Visual/Spatial and Mathematical/Logical.

C. Integration:
a. Social Orientation: Fake News. Do not easily judge by what you have seen; learn to
look for further information.
b. Lesson Across Discipline: History
c. Biblical Passage: Lev 19:35
'You shall do no wrong in judgment, in measurement of weight, or capacity.
III. EVALUATION/ ASSESSMENT
Convert each measure to the indicated unit of measure.
1. 1cm. = _____ mm.
2. 49,000 m. = _____ km.
3. 4,756 mg. = ______ kg.
4. 0.25 mg. = _____ g.
5. 1 millennium = _____ century/ies
6. 1 century = _____ year/s

IV. SUMMARY AND ACTION

Summary: What is the importance of an accurate measurement?
Action: Convert the used informal measurement (dangkal, dali, dipa, talampakan) into
formal measurement. (meter, centimeter, kilometer, etc. )

V. PURPOSIVE ASSIGNMENT
1. Tita Mely is trying out a recipe from United States. The recipe requires 12 ounces (fl
oz.) of honey syrup. Her measuring cup is metric calibrated. This means it measures
fluid volumes in milliliters (mL.) How many milliliters of the syrup does she need for the
recipe?

2. How much heavier is a diamond with the mass of 1.03 g. than one that measures
976 mg.?

3. A piglet is to be fed with 500 g. of highly nutritious feed a day. How many kilograms
of feed are needed in 4 weeks for a dozen piglets?

ACTIVITY PLAN
Measurement

Instructions:
Students will be paired according to their height. (short-short) (tall-tall). Using their
dangkal, measure your partner’s height.

Material: Wall chart of height/ 5ft. ruler

Target Audience: Students

Activity Development:
 The teacher will ask her students to have a partner.
 Using their dangkal, measure each other and take note the measurement
 Ask them to measure their height using the height chart posted in the wall or a ruler.
 Ask them to compare the measurement of dangkal with the measurement in the
chart.
Example: 9 dangkal= 5 ft. and 2 inches
 After comparing their own measurement, change the partner randomly and compare
their measurement. Let them look if the measurement equivalents are the same.
 The teacher will now ask the student what is the importance of measurement
system.

After this activity, the students will be able to …

 Learn to look for a specific measurement rather than use informal measurement.
 Appreciate the importance of measurement system.
 Do not easily believe in given information only, look and observe further.
 Discover what is right.

As a teacher, I want to see in my students after the activity are the following:
 They will know how to convert substandard measurement to standard measurement.
 They will choose to use standard measurement system.
 Know that there is a solution in every inaccurate, inappropriate and substandard
problem.
