BUYER’S GUIDE

MANAGED SERVICE PROVIDER (AWS) BUYER’S GUIDE

MARKET OVERVIEW
Cloud computing has become a staple in any modern enterprise. Companies are working
with infrastructure providers like Amazon Web Service, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud
Platform, and more, to accomplish their cloud computing goals. As the technology
continues to advance, though, many enterprises are feeling overwhelmed with managing
and operating their infrastructure. To fill this market need, solution and service providers
have made enterprise cloud easier to deal with. Specifically, cloud managed service
providers (MSPs) work directly with clients to develop the solutions they need to get their
cloud running optimally.

It is impossible to fully explain what a cloud managed service provider can do. It can be just
about anything cloud-related. Enterprises looking for help with migration, transformation,
automation, DevOps, and more will be able to develop a beneficial partnership with their
MSP. Another term people use for MSPs is managed service partner. Depending on your
needs, an MSP can offer support 24/7/365. These companies employ a large pool of
certified engineers for your respective cloud and are designed to help fill your needs.

Not all managed service providers are built the same. MSPs are used by enterprises of any
size to accomplish a variety of services. Each company has different IT needs and each
managed service provider specializes in different areas. We’ve created this guide to help
you pick the right provider for your specific goals. Hybrid and multi cloud are increasing in
popularity, many can help with that as well.

It’s important to distinguish the parameters of inclusion in this guide. Each vendor is an
AWS certified MSP, with some offering services for other platforms and private clouds as
well. AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud Platform stand out amongst infrastructure
providers due to their scale and market reach. These vendors are also known as
“hyperscale providers.” We use this term within the guide to concisely talk about these
cloud infrastructures.

This market is not yet mature, as many vendors have only begun offering these services
within the last five years. However, it is experiencing dramatic growth as cloud infrastructures
become more complex, and enterprises are looking to do more with IT. Many vendors come
from different technology backgrounds, such as data or security, and bring that expertise
to their managed services. Since this market is so young, each company in this guide has
been working to expand their services through internal development or acquisitions.

Solutions Review has developed this buyer’s guide to help enterprises find the best
managed service provider for their AWS needs. AWS provides unique advantages that
are enhanced by each vendor in this guide. In this resource, we feature 10 questions to
ask during the buying process, one-page vendor profiles that provide a solution overview,
three key features, contact information, and our own ‘Bottom Line’ analysis. Companion
research, such as our buyer’s guides for Azure, Google, and containers can be found at

5 Questions You Should Ask When

Evaluating A Public Cloud Managed
Service Provider

What are the specific business needs I’m looking to address?

This may seem like an obvious question, but MSPs offer a wide range of competencies, so this answer could provide more insight
than you realize. Some teams may be looking to implement DevOps, while others might just want to cut costs and have a simple
management platform to use. Clearly defining business needs driving your project or migration will prevent any miscommunication
with your perspective MSP.

How long do I want the partnership between myself and the MSP to last?
Managed service providers are often called managed service partners because this relationship is meant to be a partnership. These
partners help enterprises figure out how to best utilize their cloud infrastructure. Some clients may want to work with an MSP for
years, but some may only want help getting started on their cloud journey with a migration and some basic transformational tools.
Understanding how long this partnership will last, and how long it will take for your goals to be accomplished, is important.

How does my budget coincide with my cloud goals?

Since MSPs have a variety of service offerings, understanding what your plans are and what costs to expect is crucial. Some
enterprises may only want a quick solution for their cloud, but this can easily lead to wanting more. If you go into the relationship
with specific goals and a budget in mind, an MSP will work with you to find a solution. It’s even possible that the vendor will be
generous with offerings when you know your budget, as flexible pricing is increasingly common.

Do I want a hybrid or multi cloud?

Hybrid and multi cloud environments are growing in popularity as enterprises recognize the value of having multiple clouds. Each
hyperscale infrastructure or private cloud provides different value, and this value should be taken advantage of. Some MSPs are far
more proficient at dealing with hybrid or multi cloud environments. Even if deploying another cloud isn’t in your immediate future,
maybe you’ll want it down the line. It would be easier to work with an MSP that knows your company than switching to a new one
just for the deployment.

What do I need from a cloud platform?

So, you’ve chosen AWS and you’ve done so for a reason. What reason? AWS has potential to contribute great success to any
enterprise that uses it properly. It is particularly proficient at running automation. Companies in healthcare, financial services,
manufacturing, life sciences, and much more, rely on AWS for their cloud needs. Getting the most out of it requires an MSP, so what
do you need your platform for? MSPs can build platforms for you to use the AWS cloud easier, figuring out what specific strengths
you need can help whittle down the field of options.

MANAGED SERVICE PROVIDER (AWS) BUYER’S GUIDE

5 Questions You Should Ask Your

Potential Managed Service Provider

What is your customer to Certified Professional ratio?

One of the most attractive benefits of having a managed service provider is being able to rely on a cloud Certified Professional.
Having a high ratio of professionals to clients increases the availability and personal touch you might be looking for. Some
companies try to work with a limited number of large enterprises, so they always have a professional available to help. This service
is supposed to be a partnership between MSP and enterprise, so ratio can be crucial depending on your needs.

What security offerings can you provide my business?

MSPs offer varying specifications for meeting security needs. For example, some enterprises will need to follow stringent
compliance regulations, certain MSPs are better for this than others. Find out what security features, services, compatibilities, and
add-ons the prospective vendor solution has. Keep in mind the compatibility with other security solutions you may already have.
Get into detail with your potential MSP about what security functions you need and what they can do regarding your concerns.

How can you help me with ____?

Managed service providers have a variety of backgrounds, strengths, and weaknesses. Every enterprise is going in with different
expectations. The spectrum of what an MSP can do for you is vast. Some companies might only need help automating part of
their development pipeline, while others need a full cloud transformation and long-term management solutions. Make sure you
understand your specific needs and bring that information to your MSP before you get started.

How easy would it be to switch from one MSP to another if it doesn’t work out?
Every MSP is built differently, so it’s certainly a possibility it won’t work out with your first choice. It’s much better to understand
what your options would be prior to dedicating yourself to a contact. Some MSPs offer flexible results-based pricing, but this isn’t
always the case. Ask your vendor how they would help you prepare for a potential move. Don’t get locked into a single provider,
make sure they understand this is a mutual partnership of trust.

How do we go about adding services?

You may go into an agreement with a single goal in mind but might end up wanting more down the line. For example, many
enterprises think they just need help with migration, but later realize they want to add automation to their workloads. Since the
initial agreement was only regarding the migration, understanding how adding services affects your partnership is crucial.
