Timeline through Civil War

1. Jamestown Founded (1607)


 First British settlement in America
 James town almost failed but survived due to tobacco plantations
 Lots of people in James town died because of insanitary water
 Named after King James, 1
2. French & Indian War (1756)
 Fought between France and Britain
 Lasted for nine years
3. Start of Industrial Revolution (1760)
 Started with cloth industry
 Term used to describe Britain’s economic development
 Popularized by historian Arnold Toynbee
4. Stamp Act (1765)
 Made it so that a stamp tax was placed
 Tax was put on every piece of paper!
 Even playing cards were taxed!
5. Boston Massacre (1770)
 Where British soldiers shot and killed 5 people
 The soldiers were under harassment by some kids
 This made more tension between the colonies and Britain
6. First Continental Congress (1774)
 Twelve of the thirteen delegates for the colonies came
 A meeting was held to talk about the “intolerable acts”
 The “intolerable acts” were passed to “punish” Massachusetts for the Boston tea party
 Would eventually lead up to the American revolution
7. Declaration of Independence (1776)
 Says all men are created equal and have their God given rights
 Says that government should protect these basic (life, liberty and pursuit of happiness)
 Written by Thomas Jefferson
8. Articles of Confederation (1777)
 US’s first constitution
 Documents favored state power over government
 Failed because government didn’t have enough power
 Written by John Dickson
9. Constitutional Convention (1778)
 Took place in old Pennsylvania state house
 Small state wanted a set number of representatives per state bigger states wanted it
based on population
 Took place to revise the Articles of Confederation
10. French Revolution (1789)
 Overthrew monarchy and made republic
 Some historians still can’t agree why it happened
11. The 2nd Great Awakening (1790)
 Revival of our faith! (Baptist and Methodist)
 Charles Finley was a great support during this awakening
 In outdoor concerts instead of bands playing there were preaching the truth! (way
better and cooler than bands 😉)
12. War of 1812 (1812 (lol who would have guessed))
 Drove out the Native Indians
 Refined boarders
 Drove out federalist party
13. Dred Scott Decision (1857)
 Decided a black man was counts 1/8 of a white man
 Help Abraham Lincoln become president through slavery
 Increased tensions between north and south
14. Secession of Southern States (Start of Civil War) (1860)
 Southerners wanted to quit the union
 Eleven states were involved
 First action that signaled to this was when South Carolina threatened to break away after
the congress said that it would tax based on the population and slaves counted
15. Emancipation Proclamation (1863)
 Was issued by Lincoln
 It said all slaves in the rebellious states were set free
 Was kind of a failure because the rebellious states were… rebellious
