Homework 7 Induction Motor 1

Alonso Moquillaza Ramos

1. What are those two type rotors of asynchronous machine?

Please try to explain their features.

Squirrel-cage rotor:
The rotor conductors are equally distributed around the periphery of the rotor. The
ends of these conductors are short-circuited, therefore, there is no possibility of
connecting the motor to the outside. The inclined position of the grooves improves
the starting properties and reduces noise

Wound rotor:

The rotor windings are similar to the stator with which it is associated. The number
of phases of the rotor does not have to be the same as that of the stator, what if it
has to be the same is the number of poles. The rotor windings are connected to slip
rings mounted on the same axis.
2. Please explain how does induction motor work

Consider a stator and rotor. On the stator, side there are three phase balanced
winding which are excited by three phase-balanced current, which produces a
rotating magnetic field. On the rotor there are also three phase balanced winding
but they are shorted onto itself. At the time of starting rotor is stationary. Due to
which there is a relative motion between the rotating magnetic field and stationary
rotor, due to which an emf is induced in the rotor conductors as per the faraday law
of electromagnetic induction. As rotor winding is shorted over itself, due to this
induced emf a current start flowing in it. The direction of this induced current will be
in such a way that it will oppose the very cause of its production as per the lenz
law. The cause of production here is relative motion between the stationary rotor
and rotating magnetic field. So in order to oppose the relative motion rotor also
starts rotating in the direction of magnetic field but with a lesser speed. The
difference of speed between stator magnetic field and roto speed is called slip.

3. Please express the relationship of nominal power 𝑷𝑵 and

nominal voltage𝑼𝑵 , nominal current𝑰𝑵 ?

4. How does the output torque of an induction motor can be

calculated if the nominal values of induction motor are known?

Torque
While the input to the induction motor is electrical power, its output is mechanical
power and for that, we should know some terms and quantities related to
mechanical power.

Any mechanical load applied to the motor shaft will introduce a torque on the motor
shaft. This torque is related to the motor output power and the rotor speed
