XX3842 Series Function

UC3842 CURRENT MODE PWM CONTROLLER

The fundamental challenge of power supply design is to simultaneously

realize two conflicting objectives: good electrical performance and low
cost. The UC3842/3/4/5 is an integrated pulse width modulator (PWM)
designed with both these objectives in mind. This IC provides designers
an inexpensive controller with which they can obtain all the performance
advantages of current mode operation. In addition, the UC3842 series is
optimized for efficient power sequencing of off-line converters, DC to DC
regulators and for driving power MOSFETs or transistors.
The UC3842 is available in an 8-Pin mini-DIP the necessary features to implement off-line, fixed-frequency
current-mode control schemes with a minimal external parts count. This technique results in improved line
regulation, enhanced load response characteristics, and a simpler, easier to design control loop. Topological
advantages include inherent pulse-by-pulse current limiting. Protection circuitry includes built-in undervoltage
lock-out and current limiting. Other features include fully-latched operation, a 1% trimmed bandgap reference,
and start-up current less than 1mA. These devices feature a totem-pole output designed to source and sink
high peak current from a capacitive load, such as the gate of a power MOSFET. Consistent with N-channel
power devices, the output is low in the OFF-state.

TL3842P CURRENT MODE PWM CONTROLLER

The TL284x and TL384x series of control integrated circuits provide the features that are necessary to
implement off-line or DC-to-DC fixed-frequency current-mode control
schemes, with a minimum number of external components. Some of the
internally implemented circuits are an undervoltage lockout (UVLO),
featuring a start-up current of less than 1 mA, and a precision reference
trimmed for accuracy at the error amplifier input. Other internal circuits
include logic to ensure latched operation, a pulse-width modulation
(PWM) comparator (that also provides current-limit control), and a totem-
pole output stage designed to source or sink high-peak current. The
output stage, suitable for driving Nchannel MOSFETs, is low when it is in the off state.

Using TL3842p current mode PWM controller is very simple and straightforward. Positive power supply
ranging from 2.5 Volts to 30 Volts should be applied at the Vcc terminal of the integrated circuit. Output range
of the output PWM is 0 to 30 Volts. Timing and bypass capacitors should be connected close to the GND
terminal in a single point ground (all the grounds of the circuit should be made common). Combination of
transistor and variable resistor should be used to supply adjustable ramp to the ISENSE terminal. External
compensation components for stability should also be placed close to the IC. Surface mount components are
recommended here as well. These components should not be located very much close to the inductor
because it will induce a magnetic field around it. The common ground of the complete network should be
placed at the ground terminal of the device to make a reference point. While using the network with the
TL3842p it should be observed that the output current does not exceed 25 mA that is the maximum bearable
current by the device. Tl3842p has a very good frequency response. It can carry out smooth function for the
frequency ranging from 100 kHz to 500 kHz.

Where to use TL3842p

TL3842p has a DC to DC conversion regardless of buck or boost topology applications. Usually
microcontrollers and digital electronics requires a higher current at lower operating voltages so it becomes
important to reduce the induction losses of power supply by making the resistance of the current sensing
element as low as possible which is achieved by using a current mode controller. Current mode controllers
are highly reliable with fast cycle to cycle current sensing for output short circuit and overload protection, so
they can be used for the protection purposes as well. Current mode controllers are being used in digital
cameras, Bluetooth devices, cellular phones, auxiliary power supplies.
