Introduction

Glenfield Valves' manufacturing facilities are located at an 8 acre riverside

location in Kilmarnock, Scotland.
Since Glenfield Valves Ltd became part of The AVK Group in 2001 considerable
investments have taken place in infrastructure improvements, product re-design to
reflect improvements in operation, and the latest technology in machine tools and
management information systems.

Glenfield Valves has always been a valve manufacturer with a global outlook
and today is part of a leading valve manufacturer, complying to various
international valve standards such as BS, EN, DIN, AWWA, AS, ISO etc.

Since Glenfield designed its first Fixed Cone Free Discharge Valve in 1950, we have
been a highly rated supplier for Dams, Reservoirs and Hydro Power
projects. Some of our many references are mentioned on page 15.

Our Aim is to become :

“Your Reliable Long Term Partner with Focus on Providing a
Comprehensive Range of High Quality Valves for Flow Control
Applications”

We will achieve this through our focused product management strategy, our
innovative approach to design and manufacturing and long term reliance to our
customers.

Large Diameter Gate Valves

Series 54 Large Diameter Gate Valves :

4 The Glenfield Series 54 is a solid wedge Non-Rising stem Gate Valve available in
sizes up to DN 1800. The valves are designed in accordance with the main
international standards.
The valves are usually constructed of ductile iron with bronze seats and a
stainless steel stem. They are protected externally and internally with
appropriate coatings.
Every valve is thoroughly tested before it leaves our facility. The valve is
pressure tested to 1.5 times the nominal pressure (PN) and the seats are tested
in both directions at 1.1 x PN.
All gate valves are supplied with the type of actuation specified.
Electrical and manual actuation are available.

FEATURES
• Energy Efficiency:
A gate valve has much lower head loss than a butterfly
valve, therefore consumes much less energy during system
operation. The annual electrical energy savings that result
from using a Glenfield gate valve over a butterfly valve are
therefore considerable.
The full open headloss coefficient for large gate valves is
0.05 against 0.18 for butterfly valves. Hence an energy
saving of 75%
• Full Clear Bore
• Suitable for higher velocities in full open position than
most other isolating valves

• Performance and reliability for more than a century

(gate valves are not designed for throttling but for fully
open - fully closed service)

Thrust is taken in gearbox / actuator and valves must be operated with a gearbox or actuator.
Large Butterfly Valves

• Double offset disc allows the seal to disengage immediately on opening,

reducing seal wear.
• Low profiled disc ensures higher Cv values.
• Profiled body seat reduces opening and closing torque and ensures drop
tight closure.
• Resilient disc seal positively retained prevents seal “roll out”.
• Blue two pack epoxy coated
• Self lubricating shaft bearings reduce friction and operating torque.
• Standard ISO mounting flange suitable for most ranges of operators.
• Lockable disc option available.
• Close coupled worm and
quadrant gearbox featuring
adjustable open and closed
position stops and disc position
indicator.
• Anti-Flutter disc to shaft
connections.
• Lifting points as standard.
• Hydraulic opening/gravity weight
closing option available
• Butterfly valves are not designed
for throttling but for fully open -
fully closed service. If temporary
throttling is required please consult
us.

Free Discharge Valves

Series 857 Free Discharge Valves (Fixed Cone Valves) :

8
Operation :
Glenfield have designed and manufactured Free Discharge Valves since 1950. This valve
was developed from extensive laboratory testing and field investigations. These tests
confirmed that an odd number of ribs effectively dampen vibrations that are found in other
fixed cone designs.

The valve body is designed to operate with minimum vibration over its full range of
opening. The valve body uses multiple, specially shaped ribs leading to the downstream
cone.

The outlet cone ensures that discharge is in the form of a hollow expanding jet, which is
ideal for energy dissipation as the water is spread over a rapidly increasing surface area,
thus permitting effective atmospheric cushioning. If containment of the jet is desired, a
hood can be installed.

The valve is manufactured from Ductile Iron, the sleeve is Stainless Steel and uses resilient
downstream and upstream seals to ensure a drop-tight shutoff. Operation is via twin
screws, gearboxes, intermediate rods and double bevel input gearbox. Actuating gear may
be manually or electrically operated.

A one piece cast unit is important for this valve type, in order to minimise
vibrations and provide maximum discharge. Fabricated/welded types require many welds
along full length of ribs, connections to cone, flanges, bosses etc. This welding in some
cases is also detrimental to the core material. Also streamlined aerodynamic rib shape and
liberal radii are not possible with a fabricated/welded valve.
Free Discharge Valves

The equation to determine discharge is : Sizing :

The size of the valve is determined by the
Q = CA 2gH net head at the valve. Net head is
measured from the minimum upstream
water surface to the center line of the valve,
Where : Q = Maximum valve discharge (m3/s)
less any friction losses from the conduit.
C = Coefficient of discharge with
the valve full open (0.83)
Typical MAX. velocities are 10 - 15 m/s
g = Acceleration due to gravity (9.81m/s2)
H = Net head (m)
Refer to the selection chart above.
A = Area of the valve based on
the nominal valve diameter (m2)

Submerged Discharge Valves

Series 856 Submerged Discharge Valves :

Operation:
11
The Vertical sleeve type Submerged Discharge Valve has been
designed and manufactured by Glenfield since 1970. The jet
energy is dissipated in the body of water immediately surrounding
the submerged part of the valve, without vibration or cavitation.

The valve, in Ductile Iron construction, is suitable for flow control

and energy dissipation over a wide range of flows and pressures
throughout its full travel and is not subject to vibration or cavitation.

The vertical moving Stainless Steel sleeve uncovers customised

ports in the bronze body thus creating a horizontal radial exiting jet.

The sleeve is operated by a central vertical spindle rising through a

sealed gland in the inlet bend.

Actuating gear may be manually or electrically operated.

The valve is offered in two designs, one having equal inlet/outlet diameters and
the other having reduced size outlet diameter.
