Project Name: Dharapani-Patap road and drain

Project Code:
Municipality: Shankarapur
Project Location: Shankarapur ward 2

Shankarapur Municipality
 Coordinates: 27°44′48″N 85°30′35″E
 Area 60.21 km2 (23.25 sq. mi)
 Population (2011 Nepal census) 25,338

Project background and location:

This road connects the underdeveloped parts of municipality to the major road
(Sankhu-Melamchi). This road is of around 5km in length and starts at Dharapani(ward-
2), Kundeshwor(ward-2) and ends at Patap(ward-2).

Objectives of the project:

 People from Kundeshwor, Patap don’t have easier access to transportation services
due to lack of proper roads due to which they are facing different type of problems in
their daily life. So, if constructed this road will help people in their day to day life.
 Some kilometres ahead of Patap these road touches Sindhupalchowk. This road can
be an alternative linkage of Shankarapur and Sindhupalchowk.
 Farmers from these areas can bring their agricultural products to nearby market easily
and in low costs which will help in decreasing the prices of agricultural goods.

Present Transportation Condition

The road is generally earthen at all section and for some small chainages at different
sections it is gravelled. Daily about 2 buses run in this route which gives transportation
facilities to people. Also, mini trucks run in this route to transport vegetable products.

Functional Hierarchy of The Municipality Road

These roads have been classified based purposed.
Road Class A (Main Collector):
These roads are major transportation corridors within the municipal territory. These roads are
assumed to have higher traffic and they pass through along the east to west or north to south
of the municipal area. Further, these roads connect major settlements or market areas within
the municipality. Functionally, these roads collect the traffic from major settlements, tourist
area to the SRN linkages. Minimum RoW for class A road is 14 m.

Figure 4Typical Cross section for class A Road

Road Class B (Other Collector Roads):

These roads serve as collector road from relatively small settlements and having less traffic
flow. The minimum RoW for such class of roads is 10 m.

Road Class C (Tole Roads)

These types of urban roads are for the purpose of residential access. Residential streets are
designed for the lower traffic volume, especially private transport. Therefore, RoW for this
class of roads is designed for single lane pavement. Minimum RoW strip for such class of
road is 8 m.

Road Class D (Other Tole Roads)

These types of roads are constructed only in residential areas. Minimum RoW for such roads
is 4 m. However, the RoW for new or planned Class D roads (residential roads) should have
at least 6 m RoW.
