Natural alternatives to the Pill

You don’t have to risk the
adverse effects of
hormones, given the range
of effective alternatives

T he contraceptive pill is said

to be the most commonly used
drug of all. More than 300
million women worldwide have been
on ‘the Pill’ at some time or other, and
one hundred million-plus women are
currently taking it.
Its convenience and nearly 100-per-
cent rate of success are no doubt the
major draws. However, numerous
studies suggest there’s a high price to
pay for taking the Pill. Indeed,
thrombosis, stroke, cancer, brittle
bones and a reduced libido are just
some of the health risks associated
with these agents (Bennett J, Pope A. The
Pill: Are You Sure It’s For You? Crows Nest,
N.S.W., Australia: Allen & Unwin, 2008).
Happily, the Pill isn’t the only
option if you don’t want to become
pregnant. As well as the safer
conventional forms of contraception
(see box, page 3), there are also a
number of natural alternatives for
preventing pregnancy.

Other ways to push your buttons

Several methods using acupuncture points have been studied and found to be useful for pain relief, including:
! Acupressure, which applies pressure to specific points along the energy meridians of the body. In a randomised,
controlled trial of 75 labouring women, the duration of labour and pain were both reduced by 30 minutes of acupressure
on the Spleen 6 (SP6) acupoint, located about 6 cm (just over 2 in) above the inside ankle, compared with just touching
the SP6 acupoint (controls) (J Altern Complement Med, 2004; 10: 959–65).
! Electroacupuncture, which uses low-voltage electricity on the acupuncture needles to produce bigger effects. although
a 1985 study only found “moderate results” with electroacupuncture for pain relief (Zentralbl Gynakol, 1985; 107: 532–8). A later
study using electroacupuncture during IVF egg retrieval concluded that it was an effective drug-free way to relieve pain
(Hum Reprod, 2005; 20: 728–35).
! Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS), which transmits electrical impulses via electrodes, brought about
pain relief in around 60 per cent of the 209 patients in one study, as well as significantly reduced the time to delivery
(Zentralbl Gynakol, 1985; 107: 532–8).

Contraception, pregnancy and birth

Postnatal depression:
a bad case of the blues
Postnatal depression is a
crippling mood disorder
that can have long-lasting
effects for both mother
and baby. Happily, there
are a number of natural
ways to prevent and treat
it—from supplements to
massage therapy

N
ew evidence now suggests
that a simple supplement
could be the key to
preventing postnatal depression
(PND), a devastating condition
that affects 10 to 15 per cent of
women after having a baby.
Selenium—a trace mineral
found naturally in foods such as
Brazil nuts and fish—has
previously been shown to reduce
the risk of cancer, infertility and a
range of other conditions. Now,
researchers have found that taking
100 mcg/day of selenium during
pregnancy can effectively ward off
PND.
In a randomized, double-blind,
placebo-controlled trial (con-
sidered the ‘gold standard’ for
scientific evaluation), 166 women,
pregnant for the first time and in
their first trimester of pregnancy,
took either selenium or a dummy
pill every day until delivery. After
deliver y, the women were
monitored for symptoms of PND
over a period of eight weeks, using
the Edinburgh Postnatal Dep-
ression Scale.

Osteoporosis: the
brain–bone connection
New research has revealed an intriguing link between
osteoporosis and depression

O
steoporosis, a leading cause
of bone fractures, is the
most widespread deg-
enerative disease in the West,
affecting around three million
people in the UK and 10 million in
the US. Women are most at risk,
with one in six Western women
expected to suffer a hip fracture at
some point in their lives.
Our genes, age, diet and lifestyle
are all known to have an influence
on our bone health. Now, it appears
that our mental health may also
have a significant part to play.
Indeed, intriguing new research
has found that depression, a
condition that afflicts more than
120 million people worldwide,
could be an important risk factor
for osteoporosis—and especially in
women.
