Module 1 Grammar

TASK 1

Use an example of each of the following in a sentence and underline it.

1. an adjective: Ram is an angry boy.

2. an adverb: Randy eats slowly.

3. a countable noun: There are almost four restaurants in London where


I like to go.

4. an uncountable or mass noun: I drink milk daily.

5. a conjunction: I tried to hit the ball with the bat but hit my leg instead.
6. a preposition of time: I have been living in London since January.

7. a preposition of movement: We flew from Delhi to London.

8. a question tag: You’ve been told about meeting, haven’t you?

9. an auxiliary verb: I am having a cup of coffee.

10. a gerund (as subject of a sentence): Reading is relaxing.


TASK 2

Write an example for each of the following :-

1. a positive statement
We should tell the truth.

2. a negative statement
We should never tell lies.

3. an interrogative
Why did Ram leave so late?

4. an imperative
Clean the garden.

TASK 3

Write one sentence in each of the following tenses and forms and where
appropriate use complex sentences in order to demonstrate the tense in
context eg ‘When I was......., I .........’ Make sure you use your own
original sentences. Do not copy sentences from Back-To-Basics
Grammar (Unit 1) or from the test in this module.

1. present simple for regular events or states


Ram reads book every day.
2. present continuous (or present progressive) for ongoing events
Radhika is driving the car.

3. past simple
He drove my car yesterday.

4. past continuous (progressive)


Randy was writing a letter to Rima.

5. present perfect
Simba has eaten the breakfast already.

6. present perfect continuous (progressive)


He has been driving for last 5 hours.

7. past perfect
Raj had written the letter yesterday.
8. past perfect continuous (progressive)
He had been living in London about 10 years.

9. future simple with 'will'


He will eat chicken and rice.

10. future simple with 'going to'


They are going to eat Pizza.

11. present simple used as a future form


The plain departs at 9:00 pm.

12. present continuous/progressive used as a future form


My brother is playing video game with his friends tonight.

13. future perfect


Ram will have rented my house next year.
14. first conditional (probable condition)
If you sleep, you will feel better.

15. second conditional (improbable condition)


If I bought an international cricket team, I might let my family
members to play with great Sachin.

16. third conditional (impossible condition)


If I had cleaned the house, I could have gone to the Football
match.

TASK 4

Change the following from active to passive voice:-


Please note it is not always necessary to include who carried out the
action.

1.We keep the milk in the fridge.


The milk is kept in the fridge by us.

2. The boys kicked the ball through the window.


The ball was kicked through the window by the boys.
3. The workmen are repairing the road.
The road is being repaired by the workmen.

TASK 5

Change the following from indirect to direct speech, including the


reporting verb and appropriate punctuation.

1. Jean said that she had lost her shoes.


Jean said, “I have lost my shoes!”

2. Fred insisted that he would be driving his own car in the rally.
Fred insisted, “I will be driving my own car in the rally.”

3. Sally shouted that she didn't want to go to the dentist.


Sally shouted, “I don’t want to go to the dentist!”
