1 Introduction

1.1 MCGSim components

MCGSim is comprised of two main components:

l The control box emulator

l The machine simulator

The control box emulator and machine simulator are connected by a virtual CAN
bus.
The control box emulator executes a version of the CB4xx firmware, modified to
run on a personal computer. The emulator also provides a user interface that
enables you to interact with the emulator as if you were using a CB4xx control box.
The machine simulator provides a configurable set of virtual system components
(such as GPS receivers, slope sensors, and valve modules) that generate outputs in
response to the movements of a virtual machine.

1.2 Limitations
The limitations of MCGSim are:

l The Setup Menu – Installation dialog does not include these menu items:
Guidance Hours
l You cannot:
change the frequency band of an SNRx10 radio
enable wireless communications, or display messages from the site office

Do not use MCGSim to generate .mch or .dsp files for use on a real machine.

2 Installing MCGSim on your Computer

2.1 Introduction
To install MCGSim on your computer, you need the Trimble GCS900 Grade
Control System Universal Serial Bus (USB) flash drive. To run the software, you
need the Microsoft® Windows® XP operating system, or later.

2.2 Installation procedure

Before installing MCGSim, do the following:

l Close all programs.

l Make sure that you have local or domain administration rights. For more
information, contact your computer support person.

To install MCGSim:

1. Place the GCS900 Grade Control System USB flash drive into the USB port of
your computer.
2. Double-click on the Trimble USB ReadMe file in the root directory.
The first page of the USB ReadMe document opens.
3. Select the language you require.
4. An Information page About This USB Flash Memory appears.
5. Scroll down to the section on Training Tools and click on the 02 Training
Tools, ETC\Emulator - Earth Moving folder hyperlink.
6. Select the control box type that you want to run. For example, CB450.
7. Double-click on the Trimble-mcgsim-CB4xx-trmb_(v12.10) executable file.
You may receive a User Account Control message asking if you want to allow
the MCGSim program to make changes to your computer. Click Yes.
A dialog similar to the following appears:

10 GCS900 Grade Control System Machine Control and Guidance Simulator User Guide

8. Click Install. The Installing step appears, with a progress bar showing the
installation progress. The program files are automatically saved to:
C:\Program Files\Trimble\MCGSim CB4xx (<version_no>)
9. Once the install is complete, the Completing the Trimble MCGSim CB4xx
Setup Wizard appears. Click Finish.
If the Run Trimble MCGSim CB4xx (V12.10) checkbox is selected, then
MCGSim automatically starts.
10. An MCGSim launch icon automatically appears on your desktop. The installer
also creates the following directory:
C:\MCGData-CB4xx_trmb_(<version_no>)
This directory emulates a USB flash drive, and contains the following files:
design
machine configuration (.mch).
display configuration (.dsp).
log (.txt).
partial settings (.psf)
Sky Plot almanac (.ssf)
screen snapshots (.gif).
