This assignment gives you practice in answering a variety of questions, to develop your
mathematical skills. Please take advantage of all the help that is available to you in developing
your mathematical skills from timetabled tutorials and from the support available from the maths
Support and Resource Centre. You can drop in to the centre, book sessions at the centre, and/or
make use of all the help available online.
Answer all the following questions. You must include sufficient working to
demonstrate your understanding of the solution.

(For example, a student with number 364489 would have X = 12m and Y = 10m)
4. A woman is on a lake in a canoe 1km from the closest point P of a straight shoreline.
She wants to get to a point Q, 9.5km along the shore from P. To do so, she paddles
to a point R between P and Q and then walks the remaining distance to Q. She can
paddle 3.5km/hour and walk 5.1km/hour. How should she pick the point R so that
she gets to Q as quickly as possible? 10%

For full marks you must simplify the answer for part c) as far as possible using
the logarithm rules.

6. The second moment of area (I) describes the effect of different cross-sectional
geometries. It is used in structures when calculating beam deflection, and in
hydraulics when calculating the stability of floating bodies, for example.
This diagram shows a rectangle with area bh. The + shows the centroid, which is the
geometric centre of the shape, and the dashed line (labelled G) shows an axis which
passes through the centroid, which is also parallel to the top and bottom edge.
The shaded area is just one small portion of the shape which is a distance r from the
dashed axis and has an area bδr. By varying r between –h/2 and h/2, it is possible to
move the shaded area so that each part of the rectangle is highlighted in turn.
An expression for IGG is found by multiplying each small area (bδr) by the square of the
distance from the GG axis (r2) and then adding these together. If δr is assumed to be
very small it can be written as dr and IGG can be found using the following integration.
h / 2
7. Figure Q7 shows Fadum’s chart which is used in geotechnics for finding the vertical stress
at depth Z due to a rectangular foundation with dimensions B and L. The Influence factor is
plotted using a linear scale on the vertical axis, but the ratio B/Z is plotted using a log 10()
scale on the horizontal axis.
a) With reference to the graph, briefly explain the advantage of using the log scale in this
case. 5%

b) Find the midpoint between 1 and 2 on the horizontal axis. What value does

this represent? You must provide a calculation to support your answer.

Extenuating Circumstances
If something serious happens that means that you will not be able to complete this assignment, you
need to contact the module leader as soon as possible. There are a number of things that can be
done to help, such as extensions, waivers and alternative assessments, but we can only arrange
this if you tell us. To ensure that the system is not abused, you will need to provide some evidence
of the problem.
Any coursework submitted late without the prior agreement of the module leader will
receive 0 marks.
Academic Misconduct
The University defines Academic Misconduct as ‘any case of deliberate, premeditated cheating,
collusion, plagiarism or falsification of information, in an attempt to deceive and gain an unfair
advantage in assessment’. This includes attempting to gain marks as part of a team without
making a contribution. The Faculty takes Academic Misconduct very seriously and any suspected
cases will be investigated through the University’s standard policy (Academic Misconduct). If you
are found guilty, you may be expelled from the University with no award.
