Lecture Seminar
How to Read a Building
“Once you learn to read, you will be forever free.” These are the words of Frederick Douglass,
an African-American social reformer, orator, writer, and a national leader. It may seem like he is
talking about reading books, but we believe he is talking about “Reading”. Reading has a far
deeper meaning than just reading a book. It means observing, asking questions, listening and
most importantly understanding why a thing or an object or a person is the way it is! Being in
the field of design and architecture it is very important for the students and the architecture
professionals to understand ‘How to Read a Building’. Mies van der Rohe said, "God is in the
detail.", and we realized our historic cities, no matter how small or big they are has a wonderful
treasure within them. We believe the young generation has a lot more to learn from the cities
of India, from architecture, aesthetics, space utilization, material, climate, nature, topography,
urban design and many more. In design and architecture schools, the students are learning
many aspects of design, but in the process they are missing out the minute detailing which
leads to the aesthetics of the whole and parts of the design. They fall short to read the
buildings, products, spaces and the magical effect they have because of lack of time and
completion of technical drawings. We try to bring that sensitivity in the students and
participants through these workshops and seminar.
