Recognized issues
Valve problems due to:
1. Erosion
a) Due to contaminants (sand, salt)
b) Cavitation / Flashing
c) High vibration / High speed impact
2. Leakage over the seat
3. Leakage over the seals (emissions)
4. Noise level
5. Rangeability and controllability
6. Safety

Dux solution for recognized issues

1a Erosion: due to contaminants (sand, salt)
Based on both material and design choice the meantime between failure is much longer. Tungsten
Carbide or even Diamond (PCD) are used for the wear parts. A trumpet shaped ventury (also Tungsten
Carbide) protects both the piping as the valve against possible washing out.

1b Erosion: Cavitation flashing
The trumpet shaped ventury protects both the outlet and the piping against washing out due to
possible cavitation. The ventury itself also reduces the level of cavitation.

1c Erosion: vibration / high speed impact
In contrary to a Tungsten Carbide cage the disc is by its shape less sensitive for vibration and due to
the small impact angle also less sensitive against high speed impact of solids.

2 Leakage over the seat
A plug or cage type might be class V tight ex works. After some use the hard particles erode the seat.
With the Dux design the seat is not in direct contact with the medium. (protected by the rotating disc)
which results in a much longer meantime between leakage.

3 Leakage over seals
Due to our triple seal design we guarantee low leakage over the seals (comply with fugitive emission
requirement, ISO 15848, SPE 77 312, VDI 2440).

4 Noise level
The ventury reduces the noise level. Dutch Shell even used our figures/chokes to get a license for a plant
in an environmental sensitive area.
Furthermore, the noise spectrum is strong in the high frequency area and with simple insulation a
reduction up to 12 dB(a) can be met.

5 Rangeability and Controllability
By using different rotating discs turndown ratio from 1:20 (standard) to 1: 100 can be met.
Below some examples of the rotating discs are shown.

6 Safety
With a cage or plug type valve the max Cv value of the valve is exceeded if the cage or plug is broken.
Dux guarantees a maximum Cv for the live time (blow down application).

D Orifice diameter “D” is identical over a

substantial length

Even if erosion / cavitation will occur

Research
Choke CFD Erosion Analysis

Modelling

To design choke valves for severe

applications we base our selves on the long
term experience supported by CFD
(Computational Fluid Dynamics) modelling.

Erosion analysis

By combining flow visualisation, particle

trajectories and an erosion response model
we are able to predict erosion patterns at
choke and piping for the most severe
conditions (sand and choking at 10-30% of
maximum opening).

Limitations
Compared to other brand from 3” and larger relative high weight.

From 4” and larger pneumatic modulating (fail safe) actuators are not possible.
Alternative actuators like hydraulic, electric or stepping type should be used. Luckily we see less pneumatic
requirements and more electric / hydraulic.
