INSTRUMENTATION FOR UFO DETECTION

in S o uthern Califo rnia. I n the E d itor ' s opinio n, Bob Beck has
do ne mo re in the way of inno vating, developing and coll ecting
instrumentation relative to the detectio n o f UFO ' e than every
o ther UFO investigator in the United S tates put together. Those
who kno w Bob know that hie ingenio us and dedicated talents have
yet to be stumped by any proble m facing UFO investigatio n . He
received hie Bachel o r degree in E ngineering from the University
o f So uthern Cal ifo rnia in 1948. Bob was chief engineer fo r the
Wil co x Company , where he secured the basic patents o n to day1e
po rtabl e electronic flash systems, and was an instructo r of com­
munications and math at a Los Angel es schoo l whil e he practiced
consulting electronic engineerin g in hie spare time. As a pho to ­
journalist, Bob became chief staff photo grapher fo r the Lo s
Angel es o ffice o f Graphic House, and h e has do zens o f magazine
co vers to h ie cre d it. I n 1951, o ur ubiquito us co ntributo r
oecame a fl ight test nnd instrumentatio n engine er fo r the Lock­
heed Aircraft Co rp.· , an d h ie wo rk frequently took him to E dwards
AFB and the Na.val O rdnance Teet Statio n at Inyokern. Bob l eft
Lockheed to beco me the chief design engineer fo r an optical and
el ectro nic_reeearch corpo ration , from whence he went into hie
own business. He is currently president of Monitor El ectronics
Research Corp. and o wner of Color Co nt;.o l � o mpany , the l atter a
Lo s Angel es film l abo rato ry. He is a ham ra dio operator and
a l icensed pil o t ( flying his o wn Ce ssn a ) . Bob is al so Chief of
Radiolo gical Defense for Cal ifornia ' s Civil Defense District 17.

smothered under a tira de of sensel ess, subjective, mystical
and so metimes hysterical rantinge fro m peopl e with l ittl e mo re
than the will to believe. I t seems that ever� spiritual ist,
psychic and borderline Rsychotic has fo un d a home" in pseud o ­
scientific " revel ations ranging from " co ntacts" t o " tel epo r­
tations to V enus."
T his do esn ' t prove--or dispro ve--anything. I ' ve been a
pil o t long enough to kno w that 95 % of the strange things in
the sky are NO T UFO ' s, but that 5% remainin g deserves any
amo unt of effo rt to resol ve it·. O ur go vernment has assumed a
ierpl exin g po sition. They d �ny any o b j ective evidence o f
extra- terrestrial v� sito rs, yet they continue to spend mil ­
l io ns to sol ve this non- existent" d il emma. And since o ur
enti:re economy is based on " energy" --i.e., coal , gasol ine,
el ectricity , atomics, etc.--the first researchers to co me up
with " the answer" will not only disrupt the entire system , if
it is made kno wn, b ut will h urtl e mankind into a revol utionary
n ew age. I f Russia sho ul d beat us to the sol ution o f the
UFO ' e metho d o f p ropulsion , we shall be faced with some pro-
