Power Quantities in Single Phase System

1. Consider a sinusoidal supply voltage 𝑣(𝑡) = 230√2 sin(ωt) supplying a linear

load of impedance ZL = 12 + j13 Ω at ω = 2𝜋f radian per second, f = 50 Hz.
Express current i(t) as a function of time. Based on 𝑣(𝑡) and i(t) determine the
following.
a) Instantaneous power, instantaneous active power, instantaneous reactive
power, and intrinsic power
b) Real power, Reactive power, Complex power, Apparent power, and power
factor

2. Consider a single-phase inverter used for a domestic purpose that gives square
wave voltage of 50 Hz frequency. What is the nature of the current when (a)
only incandescent lamps are connected (b) only fans (RL load) are connected?
Determine power factor and displacement power factor. Draw the current and
voltage waveforms. Using the Fourier series analysis, determine the
expressions for power factor and fundamental power factor for both the case.

3. Voltage (v) and current (i) of a single-phase line operating at 50 Hz are sampled
at a frequency of 1 kHz. Table-1 provides the sampled data for half a cycle.
Determine the following.

(a) The RMS values V and I of v and I respectively

(b) Apparent power (S), Real power (P), the magnitude of Reactive power
(√𝑆 2 − 𝑃2 ), and power factor

(c) Obtain reactive power using 2𝜋 ∮ 𝑣 𝑑𝑖
(d) Is the current leading the voltage or lagging?
