After successful completion of this course the students shall
have a general understanding
 Methods of collecting statistical data (specifically sampling

Competences to be  Summarizing data (construction of frequency distributions)
Acquired  Basic concepts and computations of probability,
 Different probability distributions (continuous and discrete),
 Making inferences (estimation of population parameters and tests
of hypotheses)
 Collection of statistical data (methods of data collection,
designing a questionnaire, techniques of sampling).
 Construction of frequency distribution for attributes,
discrete and continuous data,
Course Description/
 Presentation of data (tabular, diagrammatic and graphic),
Course Contents
 Measures of central tendency (arithmetic mean, harmonic
mean, geometric mean, median, and mode)
 Absolute and relative measures of dispersion (range,
quartile deviation, mean deviation and standard deviation
and associated coefficients)
 Other measures (Skew ness and kurtosis)
 Theory of probability (counting techniques, concepts and
computations of probability, conditional probability,
probability of causes)
 Discrete and continuous probability distributions
 Sampling distribution of a statistic (for means and proportions),
Point and interval estimation

Methods
The Lecture and Tutorial parts of the course will each be evaluated
separately for 100 % and the final marks will be arrived at by giving
weights according to the hours allocated to the Lecture and Tutorial
Assessment/ parts. The details are given below :

System Mid-Term Examination: 40 % Assignment (Minimum 3): 30 %
