Ceramics II Syllabus

Spring Semester 2019 - M. Benedict, Instructor

Ceramics II students must complete at least 2 of the 4 projects listed below by the
May17th due date:
Unit: Topic:

Introduction Introduction & Studio Set-up

Project One Historical Ceramic Tradition Series


Create a series of works that revolve
around an established ceramic tradition
(such as ancient Chinese, Meso-
American, Greek-classical, 20th Century
Modernism, etc.).

Project Two Create a 6-8 Piece Place Setting


Create a place setting for 6 (or more)
with a minimum of 12 separate pieces.
The sky’s the limit this time!

Project Three Thrown Vessels in Two or More Sections


Design & create a series of vessels (5
minumum) at least 16 inches in height
that are thrown in two or more sections.

Project Four Open Assignment


You may explore any creative idea that
Inspires you (with the instructor’s
permission, of course). If you choose this
option, you will be required to write up a
detailed and specific project proposal.

Things to Remember:
 Seniors: May 17th is the last day to build and finish your projects. Period. After that
time, we will be glazing our ceramic ware.

 While you may work on the projects in any order you wish, It is important that you pace
yourselves and make the most out of each studio work day. Remember: three of the four
projects listed above MUST BE COMPLETED by May 17th, 2018.

 Your final exam will consist of a final, reflective critique scheduled for MAY 30th , 2019

In the spaces below, please describe the first TWO projects you will be focusing on this semester.
Also, please do a couple of sketches (drawn below or on newsprint if you wish) to help communicate
your ideas. (Staple or clip your drawings to this sheet and turn them into me by the end of class
tomorrow.)
