THE  ATMOSPHERE  –  LA  ATMÓSFERA  
 
THE  AIR  AROUND  US  –  EL  AIRE  QUE  NOS  RODEA.  
 
The  Earth  is  surrounded  by  a  mass  of  gases  called  the  atmosphere.    
La  Tierra  está  rodeada  por  una  masa  de  gas  llamada  atmósfera.  
 
 
The   Earth’s   atmosphere   is   very   special   –   the  
combination   of   gases   in   our   atmosphere   means   living  
things  can  survive  on  our  planet.      
La   atmósfera   de   la   Tierra   es   muy   especial   -­‐   la  
combinación  de  gases  en  nuestra  atmósfera  hace  que  
los  seres  vivos  pueden  sobrevivir  en  nuestro  planeta.  
 
 
These   gases   include   nitrogen,   oxygen,   carbon   dioxide  
and  water  vapour.  
Estos   gases   incluyen   nitrógeno   ,   oxígeno   ,   dióxido   de  
carbono  y  vapor  de  agua.  
 
 
 
 
 
THE  WEATHER  –  EL  TIEMPO  
 
Weather  is  the  state  of  the  atmosphere  at  a  certain  time  in  a  certain  place.  
Weather  changes  all  the  time.      
El  tiempo  es  el  estado  de  la  atmósfera  en  un  momento  determinado  en  un  lugar  
determinado  .  El  tiempo  cambia  constantemente.  
 
Let’s   look   at   four   weather   concepts:   temperature,   humidity,   wind   and  
precipitation.  
Echemos   un   vistazo   a   cuatro   conceptos   meteorológicos:   temperatura,  
humedad  ,  viento  y  precipitación.  
 
Temperature  -­‐  Temperatura  
 
When   the   weather   is   hot,   the   temperature   is   high.    
Cuando  el  clima  es  cálido,  la  temperatura  es  alta.

When   the   weather   is   cold,   the   temperature   is   low.    
Cuando  el  clima  es  frío,  la  temperatura  es  baja  .  
 
 
 
 Temperature  is  measured  in  degrees  (°C).    
La  temperatura  se  mide  en  grados  (°  C).    
 
The  instrument  we  use  to  measure  temperature  is  a  thermometer.    
El   instrumento   que   utilizamos   para   medir   la   temperatura   es   un  
termómetro.  
 
 
Humidity  -­‐  Humedad  
 
Humidity  is  the  amount  of  water  vapour  in  the  air.    
La  humedad  es  la  cantidad  de  vapor  de  agua  en  el  aire.  
 
When  there  is  a  lot  of  humidity,  fog  and  clouds  can  form.    
Cuando  hay  mucha  humedad  ,  la  niebla  y  las  nubes  se  pueden  formar.

Wind  -­‐  Viento  
 
Wind   is   air   that   moves   from   one   place   to   another.   El   viento   es   aire   que   se  
mueve  de  un  lugar  a  otro  .  
A   breeze   is   light   wind,   a   gale   is   strong   wind   and   a   hurricane   is   very  
strong  wind.    Una  brisa  es  un  viento  suave,  un  vendaval  es  viento  fuerte  
y  un  huracán  es  viento  muy  fuerte.

 Precipitation  –  Precipitación  
 
Precipitation  is  water  that  falls  from  the  atmosphere  to  the  ground.  
La  precipitación  es  agua  que  cae  de  la  atmósfera  al  suelo.  
 
Precipitation  can  be  liquid  or  solid.    La  precipitación  puede  ser  líquida  o  
sólida.  
 
Rain,   snow   and   hail   are   common   forms   of   precipitation.   La   lluvia,   la  
nieve  y  el  granizo  son  formas  comunes  de  precipitación.

INSTRUMENTS  WE  USE  TO  MEASURE    WEATHER  
 
Instrumentos   que   utilizamos   para   medir   el  
tiempo  
 
1. We  use  an  anemometer  to  measure  wind  speed.    
 
2. We  use  a  rain  gauge  to  measure  rainfall.    
 
3. We  use  a  wind  vane  to  show  the  direction  of  the  
wind.    
 
4. We  use  a  thermometer  to  measure  temperature.    
 
5.                We  use  a  wind  sock  to  measure  wind  speed  and  show  wind  direction.  
 
 
 
AIR  POLLUTION  –  Contaminación  del  aire  
 
Clean  air  is  important  for  our  health  and  the  health  of  other  living  things.    
El   aire   limpio   es   importante   para   nuestra   salud   y   la   salud   de   los   otros   seres  
vivos.  
 
 
 
 
  
However,  human  activities  and  natural  events  are  polluting  the  air.    
Sin   embargo,   las   actividades   humanas   y   los   fenómenos   naturales   estÁn  
contaminando  el  aire  .

TIME  TO  CLEAN  UP!  –  Tiempo  para  limpiar  
 
Air  pollution  is  harmful  to  plants,  animals  and  humans.    
La  contaminación  del  aire  es  perjudicial   para   las   plantas,   los   animales   y   los  
seres  humanos  .  
 
It  can  cause  health  problems  and  damage  the  atmosphere.      
Puede  causar  problemas  de  salud  y  dañar  la  atmósfera.  
 
You  can  help  to  reduce  air  pollution!
