Day 6
Acid Nomenclature
(Brønsted-Lowry)
Bronsted-Lowry Acids are compounds that produce free H+ ions when dissolved in water.
Traditionally, the formulas for these compounds start with the element hydrogen.
1) If the acid contains no oxygen, then the acid is named with the prefix “hydro”,
the root of the nonhydrogen element, followed by the suffix “ic acid”.
HF hydrofluoric acid
HI hydroiodic acid
2) If oxygen is present in the acid, then the suffix depends on the suffix of the anion name. The
prefix “hydro” is not used.
3) As in BIT Metal Nomenclature (Stock Convention); the suffix “-ic” is added to the root of
the cation name for the higher charge and “-ous” for the lower charge.
