Nowadays a large percentage of the population struggles with some form of mental

disorder, people need educated, people need help. There are a lot of articles out there but using a

few this paper can hopefully help compile facts and get people the education and help they need.

There are many issues today that affect people from teen years into adulthood. Depression,

anxiety, bulimia nervosa, and anorexia nervosa; These huge issues that a lot of people today

struggle with.

These disorders can affect a person’s physical and mental health. When these issues are

expectations can make teens feel a strong sense of rejection. Depression in teenagers is

increasing at an alarming rate, some surveys even indicate that as many as one in five teens will

suffer from some form of clinical depression (“Depression”). On top of all of this, they are

pestered by opposing messages from their parents, friends and society. Depression is a very

The connection between eating disorders and substance use disorders has been

documented before, especially among adolescents. For example, cocaine and methamphetamine,

reduce an individual’s drive to eat (“Connection”). Alcohol is also another drug that can be

related to eating disorders, especially bulimia. Use of drugs can cause an individual to think

about this more and possibly be the root of some issues (“Connection”). They come from

complicated mental health processes, and each involves a different combinations of compulsive

behaviors and obsessive thoughts. These often concern body image, food intake, and purging

mechanisms (“Connection”). All of these various eating disorders are very serious conditions,

these can be associated with multiple grave health consequences and even possibly death

(“Connection”).

Common eating disorders include anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge-eating

disorder. People with binge-eating disorder lose control over their eating, unlike bulimia nervosa,

periods of binge-eating are not followed by purging, excessive exercise, or fasting. Don’t forget,

people with eating disorders can appear healthy, yet be extremely sick (“Eating”). Anorexia

nervosa has the highest mortality death rate of any mental disorder (“Eating”).

lot of people today need help. Mental disorders affect all ages, sometimes in similar ways and
