Aggressive accessories: PUNK, the professional’s power tool accessory of choice

On occasions, tradesmen get frustrated with their tools on the job – time is money, but put the new power tool accessory
brand PUNK in your machine and you’ll hit peak performance every time. The highly disruptive PUNK range is designed
to give you the edge. From drill bits to jigsaw blades, the ‘power’ in any power tool is a direct result of the accessories that are
used – and as every tradesman knows, the tools you use can make or break a job. The range has been extensively researched in
lab tests and on-site trials to ensure the highest quality and performance; every aspect has been developed with the demanding
professional tradesman in mind. As part of the full range roll out, six free sample accessories will be launched over six months
for tradesmen to ‘try-before-they-buy’. The first month sees the launch of PUNK’s powerful ‘SDS+ Drill Bit’, which is available
to claim from the PUNK website. Created using the toughest tungsten carbide material, every tip is securely brazed into the
drill to prevent breakouts. The upshot is SDS+ drill bits that offer professionals peace of mind to get the job done – regardless
of whether they’re drilling brickwork, quarrystone, masonry or reinforced concrete. PUNK is for the professional with high
expectations. There are no gimmicks, it’s just great at what it does.

According to findings from forthcoming

Extracts from the report released by the Climate

already suggested that the retrofitting of air condi-

logical innovation is increasingly being matched by
efforts to improve patient “healing” and well-being by
designing hospital environments with greater access to
natural daylight and ventilation, more generous spaces and a

The UK’s boldest example of this evidence-based approach
to design is the £430 million Brunel building at Southmead
Hospital, in Bristol, a new breed of “super hospital” featuring
light-filled internal courtyards, naturally ventilated patient
rooms, and a huge full-height glass atrium as tall as the nave of

E
urobond Laminates has provided Rockspan external wall panels for
the new Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital at
Cramlington. This new hospital concept will deal purely with emer-
gencies and life-saving procedures – a first for the UK.
The 200mm thick stone wool core panels are finished in gullwing grey and
are a cost effective solution for hospitals offering up to four hours fire resist-
ance and minimal smoke in the event of a fire.
Located on the edge of Cramlington to the north of Newcastle, the hospital
will provide a uniquely comprehensive range of emergency care to patients in
Northumbria. At the centre of the 29,000 sq m development is a three-storey
hub housing laboratories, radiology and operating theatres. The hub is flanked
by a series of ‘cogs’ that house wards on one side, and the entrance and ambu-

Beneath one end of the block is a basement kitchen.
At the heart of it all will be a courtyard play area – but with
an unusual and intriguing twist. Taking advantage of the site’s
three-metre slope, which runs from the two-storey new-build

take the shape of a terraced mound. Covered in all-weather
turf, it will be more of an adventure playground with features
including tunnels and climbing areas.
Nicki Whetstone, of project architects Haverstock, praised
HFS’s input into the new school’s design brief: “Our brief
from HFS was extensive and they were very proactive, which
was helpful. It’s important for the school that the interior
design features clusters of classrooms so that year groups are
able to integrate with each other. It was also key that as many
of the classrooms as possible have direct access to external areas.”
Externally, the local planning authority was keen new struc-

New Valchromat colours land at Lathams

James Latham has added three new colours to its exclusive range of Engineered
Fibreboard, Valchromat, an innovative and award winning material which is
proving popular within the UK shop fitting, education and furniture manufac-
turing sectors. With a total of 11 bold and impactful colours now making up the
portfolio, including grey, black, red, orange, yellow, blue and green, it offers almost
limitless decorative applications. Valchromat is a unique fibreboard, in that the
colour runs throughout the entire board. This is achieved by adding organic dyes
and a specially formulated resin to the wood fibre before pressing. In addition to
its unique appearance, Valchromat is easy and quick to finish – no edging is
required – and being moisture and UV resistant, non-toxic and load resistant,
the possibilities for use are endless. Scratches and marks on the finished product
go largely unnoticed because the colour runs evenly throughout the board.
Valchromat is available in board sizes: 2500mm x 1850mm/1250mm and in
8mm, 12mm, 16mm, 19mm, 25mm and 30mm thicknesses. All wood used in
the manufacture of Valchromat is FSC certified and is sourced from forest waste,
residue from timber mills, pine and recycled pine. enq.143

Keylex locks help keep Epsom College students safe

Keylex digital mechanical locks have been supplied by Relcross to Epsom College for a number of years. Some have been
fitted to the living quarters for boarding students so that only those living in a particular house have access. An easily changed
number code negates the need for issuing keys to everyone with the potential security risk from lost or stolen keys.

Epsom chose the K700 lock which is suited to external doors and gives the flexibility offered by the inclusion of a mortice
sash lock or multi-point lock. The mechanism happily copes with many hundreds of operations per day and, being entirely
mechanical, requires no electronics or electrical wiring.

Many of the Victorian doors at Epsom College are not rectangular but gothic arch shaped and are thicker than modern doors.
This poses few problems for the K700 which can be fitted to many door types including PVCu, aluminium and hollow metal
door sections as well as wood.

Visual concrete:

‘It looks good and it does good’ is a simple explanation for why both designers
and clients are increasingly turning to exposed concrete for its visual aesthetic and

TT Admix specified for major new build construction

Triton has supplied TT Admix, its BBA certified concrete waterproofing system, for a prestigious new build project in West
London. The construction comprises a watertight concrete base slab with welded sheet piled walls and a watertight concrete
capping beam to provide a Type B integral waterproofing solution to BS8102:2009. On top of the slab is a steel framed
structure. TT Admix was specified following discussions between Triton and main contractors, Harringtons Builders Plc,
who were impressed by Triton’s site inspection regime and the company’s ability to cover all aspects of waterproofing. 800
4.1kg bags of TT Admix were supplied, around 120 of which were for the capping beam. The concrete was supplied by Quattro
Readymix at a dose of one 4.1kg bag of TT Admix per m3 of concrete. All the construction joints for the watertight concrete
slab pours were waterproofed using Triton’s standard detail with Triton TT Waterstop held in place with Triton TT Swellseal
Mastic. The construction joint between the watertight concrete slab and the sheet piled wall was waterproofed in the same
way. Triton produced a number of non-standard drawings for this project to fit the customer’s design to show the waterproofing
recommendations, including proposals for the sheet piled wall intersection and for the capping beam.

BENETEAU’s facade: HI-MACS® become art

With thermoformable, multipurpose, ultra-resis-

HI-MACS was also chosen because it helps regulate the facade – which is exposed
to large amounts of sunlight – and reduce high levels of energy due to radiation
thanks to its perforated material. Its random mesh-like design, from Frédéric

Wood burning stoves –

a heat source of the future
Experts at the Stove Industry Alliance (SIA) explain why wood burning stoves
should be considered for their economical benefits as well as aesthetic appeal

W
ood burning stoves are increasingly the heating
system of choice for many homeowners in both
new and existing houses. Stoves have traditionally
been seen as a lifestyle choice, but homeowners now also see
them as environmentally friendly and economical.
Wood is one of the most environmentally friendly fuels avail-
able. It is a renewable energy and virtually carbon neutral. The
natural cycle of planting and harvesting trees has created a sus-
tainable process that will provide carbon neutral fuel into the
future. CO2 is taken out of the atmosphere by growing trees at
the same time as it is released by the combustion of the previous
harvest. To reflect this closed loop CO2 cycle, the carbon factor
for wood logs in SAP is only 0.008kg of carbon per kWh com-
pared with 0.198kg for gas, 0.274kg for oil and 0.517kg
for electricity.
Interestingly the amount of carbon released by burning a
log is less than the carbon that would be released if it were left
to decompose on the forest floor. What’s more Defra has
exempted clean burning stoves for use in smoke control areas.
Most urban areas in the UK are in smoke control areas. This
means that a Defra exempt stove can be used in an urban house
and not affect air quality.
Most often wood burning stoves are used to heat a room
when the central heating is not in use but they can also be used
for water heating and to run the central heating system, further
reducing the home’s carbon footprint.
A stove with an integral boiler can be used to entirely run the
central heating and hot water or used in combination with
another primary heating system. According to SAP, linking a
wood burning stove with a gas condensing boiler, an oil burner
or a heat pump to share the heating of the house will reduce the for heating 20 per cent of the house and 23-24 per cent when
carbon output by 11-12 per cent when the stove is responsible the stove heats 40 per cent of the house.
Using an efficient wood burning stove on its own for water
and space heating can reduce the house’s carbon footprint
by more than 80 per cent compared with gas, oil, LPG or
heat pumps.
To enjoy the maximum environmental benefits of burning
wood it is important to use wood that has been properly dried.
Kiln dried and naturally seasoned (pre-dried) wood are becom-
ing readily available. Freshly cut wood should either be left to
dry for at least one and preferably two seasons before being used
or alternatively the wood purchased should be kiln dried or
seasoned. This is because freshly harvested wood contains a nat-
urally high amount of water, between 65-90 per cent depending

on the species. Burning water is not a good idea. Kiln dried and
seasoned wood have an average moisture content of below 25
per cent and consequently produce 4.5 kW/h per kg, compared
to wet/freshly-cut wood and semi-dried logs, which produce
1.0 kW/h per kg and 3.0 kW/h per kg respectively.
DEFRA exempt wood burning stoves satisfy the air quality
requirement for smoke control areas in the UK. This means
that people living in urban areas can also enjoy the lifestyle and
environmental benefits of wood burning stoves.
As you can see there are many good reasons for choosing
wood burning stoves as the heat source of the future. Renewable
heat avoids the emissions of heat energy from fossil fuels. When
burned, high-quality wood emits less CO2 than it does
with natural decay, and used with a correctly installed
stove, approved for burning in smoke controlled areas, it
provides both economic and environmental advantages for
all homeowners.

Specify the right screed to solve substrate stress

The screed layer of a floor is integral to making sure that this aspect of the building looks and performs as intended, which
means that installing the right screed for the location is as essential as installing the right floor finish. Developers need to look
at several key considerations about the chosen screed and the application method before verifying if the specified solution
will meet the long-term needs of the site. Flowcrete UK has built up an extensive amount of experience supplying screed
solutions to some of the largest commercial and industrial sites in the country, meaning that it is well placed to advise on the
optimum application for a new-build or refurbishment project. The resin flooring specialist’s comprehensive selection of floor
screeds includes a number of heavy-duty, self-smoothing and environmentally friendly surface underlayments. For sites that
want to get the most out of the screed layer, Flowcrete UK can provide its award-winning Isocrete K-Screed solution, which
contains a plasticising and accelerating admixture to enhance the system’s performance. The K-Screed solution exhibits high
strength, excellent moisture control and rapid installation times to provide construction projects with a reliable screed layer
that also allows for earlier follow-on work to speed up construction schedules.

the area to offer a Changing Places accessible, assisted

Commission’s equality analysis, which highlighted the need for more toilet
accommodation, including that for disabled people. Larger than conventional,

Leisure Industry Week returns

Leisure Industry Week (LIW) returns on Tuesday 30 September at Birmingham’s NEC, and the Duŝo Sport shower takes
centre stage at Horne’s stand in the Facilities Zone. Launched at LIW 2013, the Duŝo has been adopted by a growing number
of local authorities, schools and private operators for leisure club new-builds and refurbishments such as Dundee Ardler
Centre, Widnes Sports Pavilion and Rotherham iMotion gym. A visually striking and fresh design, its bright anodised
aluminium column elegantly curves at the top to accommodate the bold shape of the polished chromium shower head and
its integral 60 second flow duration mechanism. A coloured spray plate and timed-flow actuator paddle adds further zing to
the design – available in four colourways for matching with other elements of the interior design or for use as practical indi-
cators. Specifically designed for ease of installation and maintenance, the Horne range of pre-plumbed shower panels combine
different flow and temperature control options with a fixed swivel, fixed vandal resistant or handset with hose and riser bar,
thus offering combinations for standard or specialist applications such as DDA compliance or discerning Horne customers

KingspanTarec® launch Kooltherm® FireSleeve

Limiting the spread of smoke and fire is a key consid-
eration for any building owner. To ensure maximum
protection, Kingspan Tarec has now unveiled the
Kingspan Tarec Kooltherm FireSleeve, a slim solution
which expands to several times its normal size in the
event of fire, helping to seal service penetrations and can reinstate the original fire
rating of a building element. The Kooltherm FireSleeve comprises an intumescent
layer inside a stainless steel facing and is sealed at both ends with compressible
rings. The product achieves a two hour fire integrity rating to BS EN 1366 and
is particularly suited for use on fire rated constructions where inadequately sealed
building service penetrations can act as a channel for smoke and flames.
