THE CAUSE OF ADDITION IN PLAYING MOBILE LEGENDS

AMONG THE GRADE 11 STUDENTS OF BNSF

Introduction

This research study is all about the cause of addiction in playing mobile legends among the grade

11 students of BNSF, this study tells about the reasons why student of BNSF are addicted in

playing mobile legends and what is the implication of this to their studies, and what is the

positive and negative if a student play this game.

According to Dr. Brent Conrad (2012) in his article entitled Gaming addiction statistics, facts,

article, and research he stated that “In recent years gaming addiction (computer game

addiction, console gaming addiction, or even excessive play on portable systems) has received

increased attention not only from the media, but also from psychologists, psychiatrists, mental

health organizations, and gamers themselves.”

According to Jjman45 (2018) in his article entitled what is time management. He stated that

“Time management is the process of organizing and planning how to divide your time between

specific activities. Good time management enables you to work smarter – not harder – so that

you get more done in less time, even when time is tight and pressures are high. Failing to manage

your time damages your effectiveness and causes stress.”


Statement of the problem

This study aimed to describe the the cause of addition in playing mobile legends

Among the grade 11 students of BNSF

1. What are the reasons why students of BNSF are addicted playing mobile legends?

2. What is the main reason why students of BNSF are addicted playing mobile legends?

3. What is the implication of their hobbies to their studies?

Review of Related Literature

1. Causes of addiction in playing mobile legends

According to Mitsueki (2012) in her artilce intitled Causes of addiction in playing mobile

legends, she said that the reasons why most of the people who played this are gitting
addicted because it has easy controls and very simple, not too much complex, not too

much spending money because mobile legends can play for free, and it has a good quality

of graphics and visual apprance which can attract people easily usually teenagers, and

mobile legends is one of the trending mobile games in the world.

2. The effects of addicted ed playing mobile legend

According to Benny (2018) in his article intitled The Positive and negative aspects of

playing mobile legends. He said that the the negative and positive effects of playing

mobile legends. The positive effects are, first Improving brain functions because Science

is proving that playing video games with moderation is good for your brain. Puzzle games

are generally considered the most beneficial. This is what brain scientist Daphne

Bavelier declares: “the effect of video games on the brain is very similar to the effect of

wine on the health: there are some very poor uses of wine, there are some very poor uses

of video games. But, when consumed in reasonable doses and at the right age, wine can be

very good for health. Video games are the same and they have a number of ingredients

that are very powerful for brain plasticity, learning, attention or vision”. Some

video/mobile games can even be used to fight brain diseases and studies have found a link

between playing video games and volumetric brain increase. Second Educating children

because some mobile games which contain learning tools can have a positive impact on

the way kids learn and they may improve classroom engagement and encourage more

effective study habits. Gamification is an excellent incentive for students of all ages and

allows teachers to reach students using the media they are most attracted to. And the
negative effects of playing mobile legends are first Distraction while performing another

important activity because one of the most dangerous effects of mobile gaming is not

paying attention to your environment and going through dangerous situations because you

are too immersed in the game world. Some people play mobile games while driving, while

others do it as they walk around – both can be just as harmful. Second Affecting social

interaction because social life has moved for young adults to their smartphones, as Internet

natives cannot imagine a day without interacting with other people via text, chat, or social

media. People have gotten used to maintaining and enhancing social relationships through

their mobile phones and apps. It is a new paradigm, not completely demonic, but one

cannot help and see something deeply wrong with it. For instance, think of a couple

spending time together in their bedroom while each is playing mobile games or talking to

other people on chat and barely interacting with each other – and you may be doing it

every day too without even realizing. Third Sleep problems because playing mobile games

before going to sleep? Bad idea because this activity causes disruption of sleep patterns

and prevents you from getting the rest you need. As a result, you will feel sleepy during

the day and probably have behavior issues as well. Fourth Loss of productivity bcause

You may not play for hours in a row, but you are probably doing it several times a day,

and the apps installed to your smartphone send you alerts and updates throughout the day

about various things that happen in the game. You take a couple of minutes just to check

the game or complete a simple action instead of concentrating on the task you were doing.

It sounds inoffensive, but these dozens of micro-transactions add up over the day or week

and cause a lot of wasted time.


3. Behavior of the person addicted in video games.

According to Dr. Brent Conrad (2011) in his artilcle intitled Video games Addiction

symptoms and Signs. He says that once a person is already addicted in video games the

behavior of that person will change, this are the behavioral symptomps that a person is

already addicted in video games, Decreased academic performance (related: see

a complete summary of child video game addiction), Less time spent on homework and

studying,Decreased work performance, Aggression towards those who prevent or attempt

to limit access to the video game, Frequently playing the game while neglecting

important responsibilities, Spending more and more time with the video game, Playing at

the first available opportunity (e.g., as soon as getting home from work or school), An

inability to quit despite attempts to do so, Staying up late into the night to play, Eating

meals while playing or skipping meals entirely, When not playing, discussing the video

game in online forums, Large amounts of money spent on new games, expansion packs,

micro-transactions, and computer upgrades, Occasional gaming "binges" of 10 or more

hours nonstop
4. what is mobile legends

Mobile Legends: Bang Bang is a multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game designed

for mobile phones (but also can be played on the PC with an Android/iOS emulator). The

two opposing teams fight to reach and destroy the enemy's base while defending their

own base for control of a path, the three "lanes" known as "top", "middle" and "bottom",

which connects the bases.

5. Time management

According to Meg Keeley (2017) he stated that "hen evaluating your schedule, or how

you spend your time, you also need to consider your goals and priorities. What is most

important in your life, right now-- your family, friends, school, hobbies, or other

activities? As you look at how you spend your time, ask yourself if this matches your

priorities."
Methodology

Research Design

This study entitled The Cause of Addiction in Playing Mobile Legends among the grade

11 students of BNSF will employ qualitative and quantitative design. According to Defranzo, S.

(2011) she stated that “qualitative Research is primarily exploratory research. It is used to gain

an understanding of underlying reasons, opinions, and motivations. It provides insights into the

problem or helps to develop ideas or hypotheses for potential quantitative research. Qualitative

Research is also used to uncover trends in thought and opinions, and dive deeper into the

problem. Qualitative data collection methods vary using unstructured or semi-structured

techniques. Some common methods include focus groups (group discussions), individual

interviews, and participation/observations. The sample size is typically small, and respondents

are selected to fulfill a given quota, and Quantitative Research is used to quantify the problem by

way of generating numerical data or data that can be transformed into usable statistics. It is used

to quantify attitudes, opinions, behaviors, and other defined variables – and generalize results

from a larger sample population. Quantitative Research uses measurable data to formulate facts

and uncover patterns in research. Quantitative data collection methods are much more structured

than Qualitative data collection methods. Quantitative data collection methods include various

forms of surveys – online surveys, paper surveys, mobile surveys and kiosk surveys, face-to-face

interviews, telephone interviews, longitudinal studies, website interceptors, online polls, and

systematic observations."
Research Locale

This study will be conducted in Bula National School of Fisheries particularly in grade 11

students.

Research Subject

The research subject of this study is the selected grade 11 students who played mobile

legends in Bula National School of Fisheries.

Research Procedure

The researcher did the following: first identifying the respondents; then have a one on

one interview regarding to the topic, then all data that have been gathered will be utilized to

determine the result.

Statistical Treatment

The data will be analyzed, frequently count of particular observation in number of times

occurs in data and percentages score of different data will be used in the study the cause of

addition in playing mobile legends among the grade 11 student.

Research instrument

the researcher used interview, one on one interview


Results

This part interprets the data gathered, in this research various result are prevented in succeeding

tables with corresponding discussion and explanation.

As can be gleaned from to table I, respondent 1 answered comfortable, respondent 2 answered

Convenient game, respondent 3 answered entertainment, respondents 4 answered

entertainment, challenging, and graphics, respondents 5 answered character or hero, and

graphics, respondents 6 answered challenging, respondents 7 answered challenging, graphics

and connect with other player, respondents 8 answered gameplay, respondent 9 answered

graphics, entertainment, respondents 10 answered stress reliever.

As can be gleaned from table II, graphics garnered 25% with a frequency count of 4, challenging

garnered 18.75% with a frequency count of 3, entertainment garnered 18.75% with a frequency

count of 3, comfortable garnered 6.25% with a frequency count of 1, convenient garnered 6.25%

with a frequency count of 1, gameplay garnered 6.25% with a frequency count of 1, stress

reliever garnered6.25% with a frequency count of 1, character or hero garnered 6.25% with a

frequency count of 1, connect with other people garnered 6.25% with a frequency count of 1, a

total of 100% with a frequency of 16.

T he respondent 1 answered comfortable , respondent 2 answered convenient game ,

respondent 3 answered entertainment, respondent 4 answered entertainment, challenging,

and graphics, respondent 5 answered character or hero, and graphics, respondent 6

answered challenging, respondent 7 answered challenging, graphics, and connect with other

player, respondent 8 answered game play, respondent 9 answered graphics and

entertainment, respondent 10 answered stress reliever.


Conclusion

Base on the discussion the following conclusion were drawn

1. The reasons why students of BNSF are addicted in playing mobile legends are the

following; comfortable, convenient, entertainment, challenging, graphics, character or

hero, connect with other player, gameplay, and stress reliever.

2. The most reason why students of BNSF are addicted in playing mobile legends is

graphics that garnered 25% out of 100% and with a frequency count of 4

3. The implication of their hobbies to their studies is that the mobile legends which is the

one of their hobbies, that can cause of low in academic performance because they are

only focusing in playing mobile legends and not taking good care of their studies.
Recommendation

Base from the conclusion the following were the recommendation of the study

1. Manage your time in doing your hobbies and your studies

2. You can play mobile legends as long as you can manage yourself but it will be much

better if you will not to play this game.

3. Do not expose too much yourself about this instead go and socialize with other people

Respondent #1: kasi comfortable sila.

(Because they are comfortable)

Respondent #2: because mobile legends is convenient, and you can play it anywhere,

everywhere.

Respondent #3: What... so the reasons of why student of bnsf are addicted in playing mobile

legends is their, they live learn unity and the game is really entertaining.

Respondent #4: lingaw kaayo siya dulaon kay online games tapos bisag asa lang ang imo

makalaban around the world...challenge kaayo siya dulaon tapos ang graphics choi high Quality.

(it is very enjoyable game because it is online game and you play against the other player around

dalon tapos kung sakit..gina dulaan nila permamente ug dili nila maiwasan ug dula tapos ang

graphics kay high kaayo ang graphics ug tapos kanang dili nila maiwasan na mag dula kay na

anad naman.

if the hero is painful they do use it frequently and they cannot avoid in playing and the graphics

is high quality and they cannot avoid in playing because they are already addicted)

Respondent #6: adik sila kay nindot man gid ang dula, nindot ang dula kanang challenge kaayo

ba, kanang patas lang gud ang dula basta depende saamo ha kung maayo baka or dili maayo,

basta maka nindot kay mura siyag dota.

(they are addicted because the game is really good, the game is good, it is very challenging

game, and the game is equal, it depends on you if you are pro or not pro, the game is good like

dota)

Respondent #7: the reason why students of bnsf are addicted in playing mobile legends is that the

game is very challenging, very high quality game and the is very aahh.. bisaya nalang is ahh is

karang pwede ka maki connect ano sa ibang aah, people uban lugar.

(The reason why students of bnsf are addicted in playing mobile legends is that the game is very

challenging, very high quality game and the is very aahh.. maybe I should use bisaya.. is aahh,

that you can connect to the other people with other places)

Respondent #8: because adik sila sa computer like dota

(Because they are addicted in playing computer like dota)

Respondent #9: dahil sa mobile legends ang graphics nito ay nakakamangha at maraming mga

players dito naah.. talagang naadik dahil nasisihan sila kapag nag lalaro sila.

(because of mobile legends, the graphic of this game is amazing and a lots of player in here

that…they are really addicted because they are enjoying while they are playing)

people who playing it, so they want to in trend .

Respondent #4: because its so fun you ahh...you can party your classmates and play.. mobile

legends like enjoy hahaha.

Respondent #5: because just have enjoy wahahha tapos kay malingaw silag dula bisag naa klase

dili sila mag sulod dili ka skwela kay gina apas nila ang dula ba...dula na mobile legends.

(Because just have enjoy whaha and it is very entertaining while they are playing even there is a

class, they do not go to their class because they only want to play the game…game in mobile

legends)

Respondent #6: nindot man kay ang.. nindot man jud ang ilang graphics, nindot ang ilang

graphics kanang mga kuan sa mga.. makalingaw siya.. maka lingaw na gani siya, nindot pa

kaayo basta wala na koy ma engon.

(It is good because the… graphics is good, and the graphics is good like it is entertaining game, it

make us enjoy, and the game is enjoyable and also very good.. never mind I have nothing to say)
Respondent #7: ahhmm ang game is karang dali lang kaayo siya maka kuha gud sa caught ug

attentions sa mga ano sa mga students or sa mga players kay kay cause of the high quality sa

game ang.. yes sa quality sa game ano siya is the very challenging game.

( ahhhmm the game is like can caught attentions in students or other players because because of

the high quality of the game, yes in the quality of the game.. like it is very challenging game)

Respondent #9: wait sa e stoop sa..dahil sa mobile legends maraming estudyante na natutupalang

at nagagnahan na silang mag laro at talagang naadik sila dahil sa effects ng mobile legends ay

nakaka bighani

(Wait…stop for a sec.. in because of mobile legends many students that are learning and they

like it to play and it can really addicted because of the effects of the mobile legends is charming)

Respondent #10:para sa akoa kaning mobile legends maka kuan jud siya maka lingaw sa mga

estudyante bah maka wala mao gihapon makawala ug stress di ka ma ma kuan halimbawa mag

buhat kag assignment nimo dapat mag pa chill sa ka dula sa ka bah para mawala imong stress

(for me the mobile legends is very entertaining to the students, same thing is can relieve stress

you will not.. example you will make your assignment and you need to chill first by playing

mobile legends to relieve your stress)


Research Question #3What is the implication of their hobbies to their studies?

Respondent #1: bagsak ilang grado..hahaha

(Fail grades ahahha)

Respondent #2: aahh you can, implication? Wait time first sah..kuan aah, it will have a negative

effect in their study because you will have, you will have a low focus in study.

(: aahh you can, implication? Wait a sec.. like aah, it will have a negative effect in their study

Respondent #3: the implication is, they might not focus in study instead they playing mobile

legends.

Respondent #4:makadaot siya sa pag skwela, pwede man siya dulaon pero dili permente kay

makadaot jud siya, dili ka maka focus sa pag skwela, sa imong studies, sa imong assignments

and many things that do in school.

(it is bad to your study, you can play it but not always because it is really bad, you cannot focus

in studies, in your studies, in your assignments and mant things that do in school)

Respondent #5: effective...sa pag skwela dili sila concentrate pasagdaan nila ang pag skwela

ilang mga homework dili na nila ma himo la.. like mga assignment, mga report.

(effective..in studies they cannot concentrate, they abandon their studies, their homework they

cannot make it like assignments and reports)


Respondent #6: ahh usahay dili ka maka kuan makahimo sa imong mga assignment, mga

hopa..mga homeworks nimo sa..gipahimo sa imo ha kay.. kay naga..sa tungod lang sa Ml ba..

malimtan na nimo ang assignment nimo na ge pang himo, gipa himo sa imo ba na assignment sa

maestra.

(ahh sometimes you cannot do your assignment, and homeworks because of the mobile legends,

you will forget your assignment that given to you, assignments that given by the teachers)

Respondent #7: aahmm kanang ang game it depends nah siya kung maka, kung masubraan ug

game is karang ma ano iyang studies is karang ma pabayaan dapat is pantay lang and then karang

time management.

( ahhmm like the game it depends, if too much, your studies, you will abandon your studies it

must be balance and time management)

Respondent #9: nakaka epekto ito dahil na lolung na ang estudyante sa pag lalaro ng mobile

legend at di na sila nakaka focus sa studies puro nalang mobile legends, puro nalang laro.. laro.

(it can affect because the student is already addicted in playing mobile legends and they cannot

focus to their studies, they always playing mobile legends, always play..play)

Respondent #10: kaning ang possitive aning kuan nang possitive ani kay makawala ug tress pero

ang negative ani ayaw lang pa subra kay ma adik ka ani ma... dili ka maka focus sa imo studies.

(the positive of this is you can relieve your stress but the negative is do not take it too much

because it can make you addicted and you cannot focus in your studies)
