Name of Project: Survey of Isolated Island Communities for Renewable Energy Solutions
Year: May 2015 – Present
Location: East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia
Main Project Features: Lead a team of surveyors and create a survey and data collection
methodology for an island of almost 2 million inhabitants. Identify the overall potential for grid
connected and off-grid solutions using 100% renewable energy based power plants. Large
utility scale power plants using geothermal power, small solar home systems, bio energy, and
large grid connected solar PV and large off-grid solar PV systems as well as many other
technologies were considered. Creative revenue generating uses of solar street lights were
also considered such as wifi hotspots and USB charging stations, commercially sponsored
street lights, micro BTS repeaters, and many others
Social and economic growth planning were suggested with electricity, sanitation and water
availability being tools for the many growth plans suggested in the document. The deliverables
included suggestions on least cost electrification planning using geospatial studies of population
densities and grid extension planning. The final comprehensive report answers the question of
the feasibility of the island using 100% renewable energy toward 100% electrification and
including its social and economic growth as well as the different technologies that warrant more
detailed studies for its potential.
