Topic: Centre for Marine Ecology.

(Priority 1)
Location:

Visakhapatnam, The largest metropolis of Andhra Pradesh state famous for its beaches, hill
ranges and wildlife sanctuaries.

Aim:

 To improve understanding of marine life and provide measures that promote a conservation
ethic.

Objective of the project is to

 Control marine pollution.

 Protect important marine species that have their hatching places along the shore line.
 Improve the environment near the coastal line.
 Safeguard biological diversity of the place.

Approach:

A design which provokes the thought of protecting the marine life forms and also the measures to
project the sea in a better perspective, will surely lead to a better awareness and the sense of
responsibility towards nature.

Scope:

 Restoration of the coastal area and projects a whole new perspective to the sea.
 Acts a regulatory body fighting against pollution and also the source for knowledge about
the sea which is necessary for the conservation of bio diversity of the region.
 Creates awareness of the marine life and the measures to take for safeguarding them.
 Marine life conservation and safe guard species on brink of extinction.
 Inspires future generations to deepen their interest in marine research and conservation.

Limitations:

Coastal climatic conditions.

Location to be near the sea front and this may impose some structural constraints.

Relevance:

So why is a marine ecology centre needed?

India took the lead in highlighting endangered sea sites as one of the top five priorities in
“Conservation of biological diversity” an international summit held in 2012, and as a part of this
research and conservation should have been taking place at the respective sites.

But this conservation measures hasn’t started yet, in order to make the conservation possible, the
endangered sites need a dedicated research station of its own along with several other supporting
activities.

In this context marine ecology centre helps in attaining the desired outcomes in conservation of the
biological diversity.
Centre for Marine Ecology
Introduction
Indian subcontinent with its 7500 km costal line, has a rich aqua culture and
marine bio diversity, however there is a lack of scientific knowledge and the
importance of the marine life within them is still not known.
To address these shortcomings Indian and French government collaborated to
establish a marine science institute of national importance which requires high
standard marine research stations across the coast of India, with a vision to
safeguard the seas and the life within them through quality research, training
and conservation.
As per the present scenario, there is a major need for such sophisticated
research hubs which not only provide knowledge about the marine ecosystems
but also help in the creation of safer marine environment.

Aim
To design the centre with spaces that accommodate sophisticated research
activities, controlled environments within the built space and also to cater the
spatial needs that provoke awareness and conservational measures.

Objectives
1) To understand the spatial requirements in designing areas for
experimenting and research.
a) Delineating the nature of work and requirements of each and individual
branch related to the research, some of them relate to
 Physical
 Chemical
 Biological
 Geophysical
 Ecological, Etc.
b) To study the secondary requirements such as services related to the
testing facility.
2) To apply modern construction practices for the provision of varied space
requirements ranging from sophisticated labs to long span galleria.
3) To understand and apply the knowledge of hatchery construction in order
to cater the spatial needs required for the conservation of endangered
marine species.
4) To create an architectural expression using the built environment so that it
emphasizes the characteristic beauty of the marine life.
5) To manifest the relation between the built spaces and the seafront to
create a strong image which increases the site potential.
